Alfred Powell for Wedgwood Hand-Painted Ceramic Stag Vase, circa 1925
This hand-painted ceramic vase was designed and decorated by Alfred Powell (1865"1960) for Wedgwood. The vessel is crafted from white earthenware, likely the Wedgwood Queensware body, and features an ovoid or globular form with a constricted neck and flat base. The exterior is decorated with two primary hexagonal cartouches, each containing a depiction of a leaping stag or deer amidst stylized foliage executed in shades of gray and black. The surrounding surface is ornamented with rows of red spiral-form roses and green leaves. Broad bands of stylized blue foliate motifs border the rim and the foot. The base is marked with a large hand-painted blue monogram consisting of an intertwined A and P for Alfred Powell, alongside the hand-painted black number 3610. The underside also carries extensive provenance documentation, including a circular sticker for the Harriman Judd Collection at Sotheby's, a circular sticker for the Rubin Collection, and a rectangular label from the Richard Dennis Wedgwood Exhibition of 1982.
