Albany,OR - Linn - 1890 - Flood Photograph :
Photograph measures 7 ¾’’x 4 ¼’’ and 8’’x 5’’ on white matte. Medium contrast and focus is sharp. Bottom caption reads “Flood of Feb. 4’’ 1890 at Albany OGN.” The photograph slight fading on the top part of the photograph, besides that there is not much wear on the photo. The matte has two very small marks; one brown mark appears on the top left corner and a small black smudge mark appears on the bottom half. The photograph was taken and produced by James G. Crawford and Andrew Paxton. The two were active in Albany, OR around 1891. The photo shows several men can be seen standing on a railroad track. High water can be seen surrounding the track, due to a recent flood. Logs and debris can been seen piled up alongside the track. Settlers began to inhabit the Albany in the 1840s when the rush to Oregon began. Floods resulted in heavy rains and melting snow runoff this mixed with Albany’s close location of the Calapooia and Willamette rivers lead to several floods in the town’s history. 1890 also saw flooding in Portland and Oregon City.
