Miscellaneous Documents No. 61. J.W. Powell, Director. Includes the following papers: 1) Zuni Philosophy by Frank Hamilton Cushing. Cushing lived for five years with the Zuni tribe of New Mexico and is noted as being the first observation researcher in the field of anthropology. This paper is the result of his first years there. Covers extensive practices of Zuni spiritual life including the worship of animals, prey gods, amulets, and charms. Includes 11 plates and 3 figures. 2 beautiful full color plates of the shields and fetishes of the Priesthood of the Bow. 2) Myths of the Iroquois by Erminnie A. Smith. This paper produced only five years before her death covers her research into the spiritual life of the Iroquois tribe. Includes practices of sorcery, mythological explanation of phenomena, tales, and religion. 3) Animal Carvings from the Mounds of the Mississippi Valley by Henry W. Henshaw. Henshaw wrote extensively during his eighty years. He became Chief of the United States Biological Survey and wrote extensively on birds later in life. Here, Henshaw discusses animal carvings and the knowledge of tropical animals by the Mound-Builders of the Mississippi. Also covered are Animal mounds such as the Elephant mound and Alligator mound. He then compares mound-builders' art between tribes and locations. Includes numerous b/w illustrations of the carvings discussed. 4) Navajo Silversmiths by Washington Matthews. Mathews was still doing his extensive research on the Navajo tribe in New Mexico during this time. This paper discusses the craft of silversmithing by tribe members. Includes plate illustrations of the Navajo workshop and ingot molds. 5) Art in Shell of the Ancient Americans by William H. Holmes. Long before the publication of Holmes' seminal bookHandbook on Aboriginal Antiquities in 1919, Holmes wrote this extensive paper including all aspects of art in shell by ancient Americans. Includes sections on utensils, ornaments, pendants, perforated plates, and bird, spider, serpent and human face and figure engraved gorgets. This section includes over fifty plate illustrations of examples, all b/w. 6) Illustrated Catalogue of the Collections Obtained from the Indians of New Mexico and Arizona in 1890 by James Stevenson. Includes collections from Zuni, Wolpi, Laguna, Acoma, Cochiti, Tesuke, Santo Domingo, Santa Clara, San Juan, Jemez., Jicarilla Apaches, Old Pecos, Canon de Chelly, collections from pictograph rocks, and statuettes with over 300 figures (several in full color.)
