Includes Introduction by J.W. Powell and accompanying papers: 1) "A Study of Pueblo Architecture, Tusayan and Cibola," Mindeleff, Victor. Includes plans and descriptions of inhabited villages, architecture, building methods and details of construction. 2) "Ceremonial of Hasjelti Dailjis and Mythical Sand Painting of the Navajo Indians," Stevenson, James. Covers construction of the Medicine Lodge, myths of the Navajo, and associated ceremonial days. J.W. Powell and James Stevenson led the first Smithsonian expedition into Flagstaff, Arizona in 1883. Stevenson took what are believed to be the first photographs of the ruins at what later became the Walnut Canyon National Monument [nau.edu].
