The photo shows a sturdy log cabin with a man standing in its open doorway. A large “Laundry” sign hangs on the wall facing the trail. The photo is #188 in a series titled, “Alaska Scenery. White Pass and Yukon Railway.” Photographer is H.C. Barley. At the bottom of the photo in white in is the caption, “The Cabin” on White Pass Trail. 4 ½ x 6 ½.” Matting is slightly stained, but does not interfere with the photo, which is slightly dark. Before the completion of the railroad, this trail was one of two 35-mile routes from Skagway to Bartlett Lake, where gold seekers began a long downriver passage to the goldfields. The first way was the Chilkoot Trail from Dyea. It was a tough haul for the miners because their pack animals could not negotiate the high pass, which meant the men had to shuttle their goods by foot. By the end of 1897 there were trams constructed to make this somewhat easier. The second route was the White Pass Trail out of Skagway. It is said that 3,000+ pack animals perished on this trail due to the rocky terrain and overloaded packs [www.alaskajourney.com/southeast/skagway.html].
