A division one Japanese metal works pictorial button
1 nice medium 19th century Shakudo example. Thanks to our own Tin Dang we have another explanation for this very cool and unusual Shakudo button. In Japanese folklore the dragonfly is the symbol of courage, strength and victory for the Samurai. The dragonfly is also a symbol of happiness, good luck and successful harvest in a farming country. This example shows what appears to be the Emperor Yuryaka who was saved by the dragonfly (as be is holding in his hand) and leading him to name the country Akitsushima (meaning dragonfly Island). Notice the robe, headdress and shoes on him which suggest wealth and therefore an Emperor. This is an unusual and fine example of Japanese metal works and in fine condition with lots of gold.
