94: A Roman Jasper Intaglio Ring Stone of Serapis
Rome, ca. 2nd century AD. Finely rendered intaglio of the god Serapis, shown in left in profile, with wonderful detail to face, beard and hair. Greek name insribed to the left, two stars and crescent moon to the right. 19th century custom mount in 18K solid gold ring setting.

Intaglios are engraved stones that may have been used as seals. Serapis was a god created by the fusion of Egyptian and Greek culture and later adopted into Roman religion. He is a combination of the attributes of the Egyptian god Osorapis (himself a composite of Osiris and Apis) with the attributes of a number of Greek gods including Zeus, Hades, Helios, and Dionysus. Serapis is identified by the modius, or measuring cup, on his head which represents his protection of food supply and fertility.
