Collection of glowing essays on the leader of the Confederacy during the Civil War that includes a history of the Lee family, a military biography, & "splendid tributes by the most distinguished military critics in American and Europe..." This scarce, over 125 years old biography of the famous Confederate leader is simply outstanding – historical, insightful, and fascinating. Covers his birth, early days, personal traits, military biography, events of the years 1859-62, General Lee and President Davis in Richmond, battles and campaigns of the Civil War, and much more. Editor R. A. Brock was the Secretary of the Southern Historical Society, and draws on its many documentary sources to recreate in fine detail famous battle scenes and military strategies, with contemporary photographs & steel engravings throughout the 586 pages of text. The gray cloth bound gold gilt illustrated stamped hardcover is in nice condition, slight scuffing exhibited on covers and edges, gold gilt fading, boards loose. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing. Measures 7.5"W x 9.5"L x 2"D, weight is 5lb, 2oz.
