19th C. Sioux Bifurcated Beaded Buffalo Moccasins
The lot features a wonderful pair of Indian hide beaded men's moccasins with hard sole bottoms from the Sioux dating to the 19th-century. The set shows a thick Indian tanned Buffalo / Bison hide top which is sinew sewn and has rawhide parfleche hard sole bottoms. The entire top and tongue are wonderfully decorated with sinew sewn period correct 1800's glass trade seed beads in a typical geometric pattern from the Sioux. The piece also shows fully beaded bifurcated split Indian hide fancy tongues. The beadwork shows a chalk whtie background with pattern in greasy greeen, greasy yellow, cobalt, red white heart, greasy Cheyenne pink, and dark green. There is very little bead loss, which shows the period sinew sewing, an early beadwork feature. The set is well kept and has a nice patina. The tongues also show a fancy beaded edge and Indian hide fringes with rolled tin metal jingle dangle cones. These are of a nice large size for a warrior / man. Each measures 11.25-inches long along the sole by 4-inches wide by 3.5-inches high at the ankle. The hide is mostly supple and the beadwork is mostly intact with very little loss. There are some renants of red ocher mineral pigment paint as well.
