19th C. Nepalese Kukri & Companion Knives in Case
Item/Description: Traditional kukri knife or khukuri, a distinctive Nepalese blade known for its forward curve and association with the Gurkha soldiers. The large, curved main blade is housed in a black leather scabbard featuring a decorative red patch with an ornate pattern. This set is complete with companion tools: the karda, a smaller, sharp utility knife used for finer tasks like carving or skinning, and the chakmak, a small, blunt steel used both as a honing steel for sharpening the main blade and as a fire-starter when struck against flint.

The design gained international prominence as a military weapon during the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816) and continued to be the signature weapon of the Gurkha soldiers through World War I, World War II, and is still in use today by Gurkha regiments in various armies. The specific design features of the item pictured, such as the black leather scabbard with the red decorative patch, were often used for military issue or commercially available "private purchase" items, particularly common during the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries (circa 1890-1950s).
