1975 Canonisation of St. Oliver Plunkett. Replica of the silver salver presented to Pope Paul VI
sterling silver
22 by 22cm., 8.75 by 8.75in.
Provenance:
Commissioned from Padraig O Mathuna by Monsignor Peter Shields; thence by descent
This salver was commissioned by Cardinal Conway, on the advice of Monsignor Peter Shields, Administrator of the Archdiocese of Armagh. It was one of five offertory gifts from the people of Ireland to be given to Pope Paul VI during the Canonisation Mass of Saint Oliver Plunkett on 12 October 1975. It was designed by the renowned Kerry born artist and silversmith Pádraig O Mathúna, whose studio was in Cashel up to 1998. Although numbered 3 out of 9, only 3 were made: one for the Pope, one which the artist retained and then donated in 1998 as part of his collection of silver to the National Museum of Ireland, and this example, made for Monsignor Shields. This is, therefore, the only example in private hands. It is signed and inscribed verso by the artist and is accompanied by a card made by the artist with postage stamps issued by Ireland to commemorate the canonisation, a cutting from The Irish Times describing the salver and a certificate of authenticity of the object. We are grateful to Pádraig O Mathúna, an old friend of Monsignor Shields and of this house, for his help in cataloguing this lot.
