1915-S[50C] Panama-Pacific MS68 PCGS.
1915-S<50C> Panama-Pacific MS68 PCGS. The Panama-Pacific Exposition was held in San Francisco in 1915 to help celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. Part of the festivities included striking single commemorative coins as well as sets (Half Dollar, One Dollar Gold, Quarter Eagle, and two $50 slugs, one round and the other octagonal). This was accomplished after a 14 ton coining press was disassembled, then moved from Philadelphia, presumably by ship, to the fairgrounds in San Francisco. After striking 60,000 Half Dollars, all in June, 1915, they were offered for a small premium, $1.00 each. Unfortunately, only 27,134 pieces were sold, the remainder was returned to the mint for melting.
We have not offered an MS68 representative of this Commemorative Half Dollar condition rarity since 2002, and with good reason. This is only the second example to receive this grade from PCGS (6/04). Rainbow colored crescents adorn the peripheries of this otherwise champagne-gray representative. The strike is extraordinarily sharp, and the luster is full with a warmly frosted sheen. A trio of tiny abrasions on the obverse before Columbia's mouth are mentioned solely for pedigree purposes.
Ex: New York Signature Sale (Heritage, 7/02), lot 5093, which realized $37,950.
From the JFS Collection, the #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
