1885-1890 Vintage Gustav Becker German Wall Clock
Featured in this lot is a vintage Gustav Becker German wall clock dated 1885-1890. One of the better quality/best-known German clockmakers from the mid to late 19th century was Gustav Becker. Born in 1819, Becker trained as a clockmaker in Germany and Austria. In 1850 he opened workshops in Freiburg, Silesia, Germany in 1850. Initially, Becker struggled with untrained help, but won the "Medaille d’Or" for design at the 1852 Silesia Trade Exposition. Becker incorporated that first medal and his initials, G.B., into his trademark and into many components of his clocks, from movement mounts to wall standoffs to beat plates and pulleys. This beautiful wall clock features a glass front door for viewing the pendulum in action. The case also features nice wood work designs and two metal grates on either side to help the chimes resonate. The case door is secured by two metal hooks. The movement in this clock dates from 1885-1890 from the specific logos and patent number the back of the movement bares. The clock comes with a winding key. Overall the movement and case show good condition with no signs of obvious damage. The clock has not been tested for functionality. The clock measures 30 1/2" L x 13 1/2" W x 7 1/2" D.
