1876 $5 --Scratched--ANACS. AU50 Details. During the Ci
1876<$5>--Scratched--ANACS. AU50 Details. During the Civil War, Federal paper money replaced gold coins in circulation, except in the remote West. Gold coins rarely appeared again in commerce until 1878, when paper money finally traded at par with gold coinage. Low mintages were the rule for Philadelphia issues, and a scant 1,432 half eagles were struck in 1876. The present example has a few minor pinscratches in the reverse field near some of the lettering. Otherwise this is a well defined, reddish-golden example with an overall pleasing appearance.
