EP-15, HB-120, S-88, Reed-TH01. One Cent, GAGE BROTHERS & DRAKE, Tremont House. Chicago, Original Silvering, Choice Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 Known) according to Fred Reed. This is Only the Third example of a 1¢ Gage Brother(s) & Drake Tremont House EP-15 we have offered over the past several decades and grades Choice Extremely Fine. The EP-15 we have sold include: EAHA Sale, February 10, 2007, Lot 777, also graded About New, selling at $6,195; a second in April 2011, Lot 231 (similar quality), selling for $6,490. This current example is very similar in overall quality to the last offered, EAHA Auction of June 3, 2016 Lot 2219, graded Ch. AU with some Silvering, which sold for $6,000. This specimen has a well centered bright clean bold blue 1¢ Benjamin Franklin 1861 Civil War US Postage issue stamp, viewed through unbroken clear mica having minimal signs of light circulation with several fine lamination lines seen when held at an angle. The case is a natural chestnut in color with light Silvering remaining on the central portions of the reverse, highlighting its legends. The case is defect-free and remains somewhat glossy on its reverse. Collectors should check their holdings as it is likely EP-15 is lacking. An opportunity to acquire this rarity, not to be overlooked.
