This is an 1859 McClellan Military saddle, named for George McClellan. Prior to the Civil War McClellan was part of a commission studying European military tactics, weapons, and logistics. When he came back, he developed a saddle based on a Hungarian model. The simple open-tree design proved serviceable and cost-effective, and in 1859 it was adopted by the War Department. By the end of the Civil War, nearly half a million were produced. This saddle features a rawhide covered open tree with a brass rigging ring to the front left of the cantle. The unadorned leather blanket is attached to the side bar via slotted brass rivets. Quarter straps and quarter strap rings are also present, as is part of the cinch strap. This saddle is in decent condition for its age. It measures 12.5". From the Kent DeVore Collection. Kent DeVore was the owner and operator of DeVore's Saddlery in Helena, Montana. Some of these items were from his Father who started the Helena Tent and Saddle Company in Helena, Montana over 100 years ago.
