1858-C<$5> MS62 PCGS. Variety 26-K. The obverse of this fully lustrous representative could not be more sharply detailed and only a modest amount of striking deficiency can be found on the eagle's neck feathers and claws. Luster qualities are equally impressive and the surfaces display an attractive mixture of green-gold and reddish hues. Modest planchet flaking in the reverse fields is more-or-less expected of the issue. The 1858-C began with an original mintage of 38,856 pieces, which is a comparatively high figure by Charlotte Mint standards. Enough were immediately or soon thereafter spared from commerce that today it is the most plentiful C-mint half eagle at the AU and Mint State levels of preservation. Of course, Uncirculated pieces are still rare in the absolute sense and these few survivors are dwarfed by demand from 21st century collectors of Southern gold.
