(1856) Flying Eagle cent – No date, no legend. J-178, P-206, S-PT1a. Rarity 8. PR64 PCGS (Eagle Eye Photo Seal).
Choice Proof (12: 3,4,5) Copper-nickel.
One of the top treasures of the Brewer collection. The obverse is the no-date Flying Eagle and the reverse is the same die as used on many 1856 Flying Eagle cents. This reverse is identifiable by the centering dot found under the upper left serif of the N in CENT. The fields have very good mirrors and the eagle and wreath are frosted, giving the coin a distinctive cameo appearance. There is a two-tone golden color on the obverse and the reverse is a uniform gold. A small spot is visible by the base of the E in CENT.
This is the finest known example. Only three examples are known and the other two are graded XF45 PCGS and PR60 Details NGC. This example traces its pedigree to Judson Brenner, President of the ANA from 1911 to 1913. It was later found in the Dr. Walter Lee Crouch collection which was sold by Superior Stamp and Coin in June 1977, lot# 31.
