1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous.--Cleaned--ANACS. VF20 Details. K-18, R.2. By 1853, the year before its facilities were revamped and reopened as the U.S. Mint at San Francisco, the U.S. Assay Office had gone an amazing distance from the primitive, hand-stamped fifty dollar earliest "ingots," "slugs," or "adobes" of 1851 to high-speed production capacity that rivaled that of the Philadelphia Mint. The present piece shows a rim bump at 4 o'clock on the obverse, and on the reverse at 2, 4, and 9 o'clock. There are numerous abrasions consistent with a considerable length of time in circulation, more prominent on the obverse, and the color is a bit unnatural, not overly so, from the noted cleaning. Listed on page 352 of the 2008 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
