c1852 Mr. M. Deriberpie is listed as an engraver in J.M. Parker’s San Francisco Directory for 1852-53, published December 1852, his only appearance in the city directories. His address was given as 58 Kearny St., the same building as manufacturing jeweler Antoine Louis Nouizillet. (Originally the name was de Riberpe, after a place in France; Regiment de Riberpe is mentioned in 1659.) On April 12, 1853, he was arrested--together with his associates Nouizillet and Routhier--for counterfeiting! A "Don Berpi" or "Dan Barpi," etc., per local press accounts, was accused of making counterfeit dollars (see Lots 270-285). Regrettably, the outcome of this case is lost to history because the explosion of the steamer Jenny Lind on April 11 crowded further Police Court reports out of the news columns, and all records were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906--but since Deriberpie made plentiful octagonal dollars dated 1854, it was surely dismissed. The D.N. series must represent a partnership between Deriberpie and Nouizillet not noted in the city directories, or subsumed under "Nouizillet Co." However, their use of Joseph Brothers’ dies and hubs suggests that perhaps they were made for them by Joseph Brothers--or was it the other way around? Obverse almost identical to BG-401, but D . N . below head; same reverse die as BG-401, rusted. Frosty Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, patches of light toning. PCGS MS63. This is among the finest known. Most are only borderline uncirculated. The coin would grade much higher except for a small cloth wipe mark in the obverse right field. Serial# 26703342 Totheroh Collection HKA#63556
