1813<$5> MS64 PCGS. B. 1-A, Miller-119, R.3. Because of widespread meltings of American gold coins from the late 1790s through 1834, the Capped Head Left series of half eagles (which spanned much of that period) is arguably the most difficult series in all of U.S. numismatics to assemble on a date-by-date basis. The 1813 is the first year of this new design, and it was apparently set aside as such because it is clearly the most available date in the series, and is the usual choice for type purposes. Offered here is a particularly well preserved example, with frosty green-gold surfaces that are equally sharp from side to side. Only the presence of a few wispy field marks keeps this splendid 1813 half eagle from an even loftier rating. Just three pieces have been graded finer, by PCGS (11/05).
