1807 American Indian Engraving: Blind Sam the royal Indians visit, Philadelphia
Federal Period
1807 Native American Indian Historical Engraving of: Blind Sam, the royal Indian's visit and reception at Philadelphia
(1807) Federal Period, American Indian Related Historical Copperplate Engraving of 3 women touching the hands and arms of blind Native American Iroquois Indian in his feathered-headdress in the city of Philadelphia, Displayed and being touched as a Curiosity by several Ladies, and who is mocked by a Monkey in the background, with caption, engraved by Leney, sculpt., New York, Crisp Near Mint.

(1807) Historic Copperplate Engraving measuring about 7.5" x 5", signed in the plate beneath border "Tisdale, pinxt.; Leney, sculpt." This rare historic Engraving by William Satchwell Leney (1769-1831), by artist Elkanah Tisdale (1768-1835), (New York): (Printed at the Porcupine Press by Pasquin Petronius, “The Echo”), thought to be (1807). Print shows a tall Native, missing one eye, standing with five women and two men on a street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, also a cluster of women and a few men at the entrance to a building behind them. In the background, a group of boys taunt a monkey in the street. The Engraving titled in cursive script: "In crowds the Ladies ran, All wished to see and touch the tawny man. Tisdale, pinxt.; Leney, sculpt.". A very interesting Graphic Americana example. A feather headdressed Indian, as an object of curiosity in "polite society" however another group in the background has a dancing Monkey in mockery of Blind Sam. At l.r. "Echo 7 page 37"; presumably the publication it first appeared in. Very choice in condition, nicely trimmed with nice wide margins on all sides showing its full text, crisp and clean printed in sharp black on heavy wove period print paper. The first example we have offered. Leney is listed in the reference: “American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel”. An example is with Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress: LCCN2014649334
