The Comstock Lode was the first major U.S. discovery of silver ore, located under what is now Virginia City , Nevada . At that time, it was said "the discovery of silver of Comstock Lode undoubtedly deserves to rank in merit above the California gold discovery.
In year 1877 alone, Comstock Lode produced $14 million of gold and $21 million of silver (about $270 million and $400 million adjusted for inflation, as of 2007). Production decreased rapidly thereafter, and, by 1880, the Comstock was considered to be played out. Currently The Comstock Lode is being explored by Comstock Mining Inc of Virginia City , Nevada .
