As with Lot 1, one can suppose that this is a self portrait, particularly because the subject appears so dashing. There's a gilded pin on his shirt front. The plate has remnants of the original seals that held it to the backing backing glass. It is now backed with black paper. It is not in a mat or case, but enclosed in the inside pocket of a black case with tortoise shell inserts, painted and gilded. It has been suggested that this kind of case was made for stationary.
