florida clamshell orchid, mary voytek
Mary Sullivan Voytek continues to exhibit her work in major museums and galleries internationally. Voytek currently teaches an environmental art course at Florida Gulf Coast University. It was through the research and discourse that evolved from this course that this new series of endangered species artwork unfolded. Currently, Voytek's work is on display at the Matsumoto Gallery on Sanibel, the HW Gallery in Naples and the Zenith Gallery in Washington, DC.
Florida Clamshell Orchid is a hand-forged aluminum sculpture that speaks to the exquisite native beauty that attracts people to Southwest Florida and also calls attention to Florida's need for conservation efforts. This orchid, encyclia cochleata, was first discovered in Florida in 1877 by botanist Abram P. Garber, and is now a state-listed endangered species.
