This institution was Ashford's sole issuer, and the census shows only two large examples extant, with no small notes reported. The Loegler collection contained the other reported piece, which realized $11,500 (against a pre-sale estimate of $3500-6500) when his collection was sold last year. With only $220 in large notes outstanding, this may be the last opportunity in this generation to obtain any note from here, and some heated competition is likely before the hammer falls here this evening. Pen signed Fine-Very Fine, with a miniscule area of bank stamp hardly worth mentioning. (7,000-10,000 )

A very rare bank which issued Brown Backs and Second Charter Date Backs only before liquidating in 1909. Only four notes are known from here, with the Loegler example, also a $10 Brown Back, selling for $11,500 against a pre-sale estimate of $6000-9000. This example, which we sold to Frank Kennedy in our January, 2001 sale, is even nicer than the Loegler note (which we sold as well.) It is a lovely Brown Back which exudes eye appeal, with bright paper and ink and wonderful two color pen signatures. It's cut a bit close at the bottom right, as are all of the notes we've seen from here, but this is the most minor of defects on an example of this quality. Extremely Fine, a note fit for the finest of Alabama collections. (10,000-15,000 )

One of the highlights of the Kennedy collection is this hitherto unrecorded large example from Luverne, a small community which is the county seat of Crenshaw County. The Loegler collection contained the only two other examples known from this one bank location, with a rather low grade piece which was badly trimmed bringing $6325 while an attractive Very Fine specimen realized $12,650. The Kennedy note is a very pleasing Fine+++ example with green pen signatures of W.B. Pope and J.C. Ford. This may well be the final opportunity for many years to own any note from this location, so expect bidding to be fierce before the hammer falls on this lot tonight. (7,500-12,500 )

McCord," the only time we've seen the term "Mrs." used on a large size National. Mr. Henderson served also as president of the family owned Henderson National Bank of Huntsville, and his signature appears on the large Huntsville national offered above. Why Mr. Henderson felt a calling to vacate his ties to Huntsville and move virtually across the state to take up duties in Troy is unknown to us (or whether he even did move, perhaps preferring to run his bank through his cashier in Troy), but his signature appears on both the large and the small notes we offer from this Troy bank as part of the Kennedy collection. The appearance of this newly discovered large size Cucamonga note marks only the second time ever that any large note from this legendary San Bernardino County community has been available to collectors at public sale. The only other appearance of a large note from here came when we sold the Colver collection back in 1999, when we noted that "We don't know what this will sell for, but if you are interested bring both money and determination." That example realized $13,200 against a pre-sale estimate of $3000-6000. The note we now offer is superior to the Colver note, which graded Very Fine with faded signatures. This piece grades a bright Very Fine+, with vibrant signatures that are easily readable. With the market even more attuned to grade and desirability than it was five years ago, any estimate is again just speculation, but it would not surprise us at all to see our likely conservative number again surpassed early in the bidding. An amazing new discovery which represents a true miracle of survival. This note walked into a west coast coin shop last fall in the company of a few Indian cents and Liberty nickels, along with a circulated Black Eagle and a Woodchopper $5, and after its purchase, was consigned directly to us. This Tulare County bank represents one of California's great remaining rarities, as it was one of the smallest issuers of currency in the state. For many years the bank, which is still unreported in small size, was represented only by one impaired uncut large size sheet, which has never been on the market and likely never will be. For years collectors have dreamt of adding a note from this one bank community to their holdings, but single notes were unreported and, with only $460 outstanding in large notes when the bank entered receivership in 1932, the survival of even one example was highly doubtful. This offering will now give collectors the opportunity they have sought for two generations. Fortuitously, the note is an evenly circulated problem free Fine+++ example, with excellent color and sharp pen signatures. This discovery note comes to the collecting community with one of those bizarre stories that seems to be repeated from time-to-time with varying but similar details, as it seems that many in previous generations had the habit of hiding money in various odd places. The consignor of this note purchased a vase at a garage sale several years ago. The vase remained untouched for several more years, until the consignor recently decided to take it apart and clean it. You can guess the rest of the story, of course within the parts of the vase was tucked this gem of a rarity. Our consignor's good fortune is also good fortune for serious collectors of Colorado Nationals, as there hasn't been even a rumor of the existence of another large size note from either of this bank's two titles until now. It isn't pretty, as it is heavily worn, soiled, and has a few edge splits at the top, but it is fully intact with no pieces missing and, of course, it is the only one available. Good-Very Good and very difficult to estimate, but if rarity and the demand likely from the many collectors from this state are any guide, our "guesstimate" here might prove to be conservative in the extreme. One of the great rarities in this collection, as the total of Georgia First Charters from all banks combined hovers somewhere around fifteen pieces, most all of which have been entombed in long term holdings for many years. The rarity of these notes can easily be understood by examining the conditions which existed when this very bank was chartered in 1866, with Atlanta and much of the remainder of the state in ruins and with the antebellum economy having been laid waste by the depredations of the just concluded Civil War. The survival of any of these notes, especially Original Series examples (of which only a literal handful exist), is a virtual miracle. This piece is one of two listed in the Kelly census, but it is the only one known to us and the only one ever to have been offered at public sale to the numismatic fraternity. Fine, with a small split repaired on the back, a truly great Georgia trophy item worthy of a place in the finest of collections. (10,000-15,000 )

Only sixteen First Charter Georgia examples of all denominations are recorded in the new Kelly First Charter census, with only two of that number being $20 examples, one 1875 and one Original. This is the Original, which is unique for this type from the state of Georgia. Although well circulated Very Good and with some margin nicks and small interior splits, the note is bright for the grade and free of serious flaws.
