Thumbnail 2 A Large Egyptian New Kingdom Wood Shabti for Aset - Rare! Start Price: 13,000.00Estimate: 18,000.00 - 24,000.00 This is a large shabti of high quality. It dates to the New Kingdom, more specifically to the late 18th dynasty - early 19th dynasty, circa 1550-1070 B.C., so it is about 1,000 years older than most shabtis on the market. It was made of wood, a perishable material, which also accounts for the fact that such objects are not very often seen on the market. The owner of the shabti was a woman called Aset (the Egyptian form of the name Isis); see Hermann Ranke, Die ägyptischen Personennamen (3 volumes, Glückstadt-Hamburg, 1935-1976), Vol. I, p. 3, no. 18, for this name. Aset is shown mummiform, with only her head and arms protruding from the shroud. She is wearing a tripartite wig, with two long, thick tresses in front of the shoulders, leaving the ears visible. Her round face is well modelled with details sculpted in relief, such as her almond shaped eyes, her full, fleshy lips, her ears and nose. Her arms are crossed on the chest, the right arm over the left one. The wig, eyes and eyebrows are painted black, and there are traces of red pigment on the proper right shoulder, and of a lighter pigment in some of the incised hieroglyphs. An inscription consisting of six lines and one column of incised hieroglyphs covers the lower part of the shabti. The text mentions the name of the owner, Aset, and contains part of the spell for the shabti as it con be found in the Book of the Dead (spell 6), telling to shabti to answer by saying "Here I am", whenever its owner is called upon to do any menial work in the hereafter, such as cultivating the fields, irrigating the river banks and ferrying the sand. This shabti has been in a Parisian art gallery for an amount of € 15,000 (US$ 19,500); it is offered here for considerably less. Height 18.8 cm, width 5.5 cm, depth 3.2 cm. Intact with some damage to the wood as shown; some wear to areas of the surface, especially on the back, making the hieroglyphs on that side somewhat difficult to read, and to the black paint on the wig. Traces of red pigment on the proper right shoulder. Traces of white pigment in some of the hieroglyphs. Provenance: French private collection Vérité, Paris, acquired between 1930 et 1960. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell. To place a bid on this auction lot, please contact us at antiquitiessaleroom@gmail.com

Thumbnail 3 An Egyptian Royal Shabti for Pharaoh Psusennes I Start Price: 9,500.00Estimate: 11,000.00 - 14,000.00 This is a solid cast bronze royal shabti, rarely offered on the market, scientifically tested for authenticity, and mentioned in a scientific publication! The shabti was made for pharaoh Psusennes I (21st dynasty). He is depicted mummiform and wearing a tripartite wig, leaving his ears visible. His arms are folded over his chest, the right arm over the left one. He is holding the usual agricultural implements, and has a seed bag slung over the shoulder, hanging on his back. The front is incised with his name within a cartouche; the text reads The Orisis, King Pa-seba-khai-en-niut, beloved of Amun. His name means "the star that appears in the city"; Psusennes is the Greek form of this name. Background information: Pharaoh Psusennes I lived during the 21st dynasty, ca. 1000 BC. The precise length of his long reign is debated among Egyptologists, but it was at least 41 years and may have been up to about ten years longer. Before the discovery of the royal tombs at Tanis, only six royal bronze shabtis were known, one for Ramesses II and five for Ramesses III. But during the excavation season 1939-1940 archaeologist Pierre Montet discovered the intact tomb of Psusennes I in Tanis in the Delta. In it he found, among many other things, hundreds of shabtis, many of which were of bronze. The exact number has never been published, but soon afterwards the total number of shabtis on the market and in collections was far larger than the number found by Montet, because many modern forgeries were made. As a result of this, every shabti on the market was automatically looked upon with suspicion. Test results: The shabti that is being offered here was carefully researched, not only microscopically but also using several non-destructive testing methods, Raman spectroscopy for the surface and Neutron Diffraction for the core. These tests were done at the Department of Metallurgy, Electrochemistry and Materials Science, University of Brussels (Belgium) and at the Department of Nuclear Research, Institute of Isotopes, Budapest (Hungary). Raman spectroscopy showed traces of malachite on a lower layer of cuprite as well as azurite. Neutron Diffraction showed the presence of a significant amount of cuprite, an indication that the copper corrosion has gone deeper into the bronze itself over the years, which is a process occurring during long-time burial. These results, in combination with other facts observed, provide proof that this shabti is authentic. A copy of the test report will be sent to the buyer of the shabti. Thumbnail 6 An Egyptian Green-Glazed Composition Plaque - Goddess of the Sky Start Price: 2,500.00Estimate: 3,000.00 - 3,500.00 A beautifully rendered representation of a female face with clearly delineated features and modelled with flared nostrils. She is wearing a collar or choker. Her face is surrounded by a band, representing either her hair or a wig, leaving the ears visible. The plaque is pierced through the head and neck in order to attach it to a mummy or mummy net. It is very uncommon to find representations en face in Egyptian art, except for depictions of the goddess Hathor. Therefore this is a remarkable and rare piece. The face represents the Egyptian goddess of the sky, Nut. But her role was sometimes taken over by another goddess, Hathor. Both goddesses could be depicted in the form of a cow, whose body formed the sky. This made it easier to exchange functions between the two goddesses. Since it is usually Hathor whose face can be shown en face, many Egyptologists have argued that plaques like this depict her. However, it is impossible to identify the goddess on our plaque with certainty. Several very similar specimens in the British Museum London have been described as Nut. According to the ancient Egyptian beliefs the goddess of the sky, Nut, stood on her hands and feet, arched over the earth, her face at the western horizon. The sun was thought to travel across her body. In the evening, at the western horizon, Nut would swallow the sun disk, after which the sun would travel back to the east through her body during the night. The next morning Nut would give birth to the sun again in the eastern horizon. Each Egyptian hoped to join the sun god after death, travelling with him across the sky and being reborn with him every morning; in fact the deceased was supposed to assimilate with the sun god, to become god himself. And like the sun was reborn every morning, coming out of Nut, the deceased hoped to be reborn daily, coming out of the sarcophagus in which he was placed. From very early times the sarcophagus was therefore associated with Nut. Pyramid texts from the Old Kingdom inform us about the sarcophagus being the mother of the deceased, who will give birth to him. In many cases there is a representation of Nut, arched over the deceased; this can be seen on the ceiling of royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, but also the vault of many other tombs, painted blue and covered with stars, refers to the goddess. In addition there is often a depiction of Nut on the inside of the lid of the sarcophagus. Starting roughly at the beginning of the first millennium BC the Egyptians would place a net over the mummy to protect him. Such nets were made of faience beads, and they could be adorned with all kinds of amulets (a djed pillar, a winged scarab, the children of Horus etc.). The bright, blue colour of the beads was a reference to the sky and to rebirth and resurrection. Such bead nets could incorporate a beaded face, which is usually explained as a mask representing the deceased, but sometimes a faience plaque is also included, showing the face of a goddess. Provenance: Dutch private collection J.T.; previously with Bonhams London, sale of 30 October 2003, lot 37; previously UK private collection, purchased in London in the late 1950s - early 1960s. Thumbnail 9 An Egyptian Polychrome Stucco Model of the Head of a Lioness Start Price: 10,000.00Estimate: 15,000.00 - 20,000.00 Egypt, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 BC to 525 BC. Naturalistically carved, with hand-painted detailed features and grooved markings on the ears and ruff. The lion is a symbol of strength and ferocity. The largest of the cat family, this animal is known as the “king of the beasts.” They are equally feared and respected for their power, speed, and intimidating growl. Kings and rulers have associated themselves with this noble creature since the days of antiquity. However, the lack of a bushy mane on this stucco work indicates that it represents a lioness. Therefore, it is probable that this head was a sculptor’s model employed during the manufacturing of Sekhmet sculptures. Sekhmet, along with her husband the creator-god Ptah and their son Nerfertum, was part of the powerful trio of deities that protected Ancient Memphis. She was a sun goddess, embodying the scorching, burning, destructive heat of the sun. Fierce goddess of war, the destroyer of the enemies of Ra and Osiris, she was represented as having the head of a lioness and the body of a woman. Like the sun, her temper was uncontrollable. In the legend of Ra and Hathor, Sekhmet's anger became so great, she would have destroyed all of mankind if Ra had not taken pity on us and made her inebriated. Many centuries ago, a master sculptor might have corrected his apprentice by showing them such a model. A useful tool for understanding the dimensions and shape of the subject, such models would have assisted young students when natural observation was not possible. Considering the subject of this work, a lioness’ head, it is unlikely that many artists would have been keen to venture into the wild and sketch likenesses of this beast. There is a royal presence visible in the face of this lionness, suggesting that she would be a suitable model for a sculpture of the goddess Sekhmet. Custom stand. Head itself measures 7-1/2"H (19 cm) x 6"W (15 cm). Intact/excellent condition, save minor wear along edges. **For reference, compare quality and recent sales price, Pierre Berge & Assc, Dec 1, 2011, Lot 123 (27,500 Euros)** PROVENANCE: Ex-private East Coast USA Collection, ex-Medusa Ancient Art, Montreal, QC/Champlain, NY, ex- Archeologica Gallery, early 80s. Thumbnail 13 An Egyptian Bronze Statuette of the Goddess Neith Start Price: 10,500.00Estimate: 14,000.00 - 16,000.00 This is a bronze statuette depicting the Egyptian goddess Neith. She is shown in a striding position, her left foot forward. The goddess holds her right arm vertically against her side. Her left arm is bent at the elbow. Her clenched fists are pierced to hold the implements or weapons with which the goddess is sometimes depicted, but there are now missing. Neith is wearing a long, tight-fitting dress and has a crown on her head, which can be identified by its shape as the red crown of Lower Egypt. The statuette is standing on an rectangular integral base with carries a hieroglyphic inscription on two sides. The text mentions the donor of the statuette and asks “O Neith, may you give life to Hor, the son of Amunirdis, born of the Lady of the house Nehemes(?)”. Late Period, circa 600 B.C. Height 18.5 cm without the modern base. The statuette is in very good condition with no repairs, damage or restoration. The surface looks somewhat worn in places and a bit dimpled, especially on the lower body. The object has been cleaned and treated to protect the bronze. Mounted on a modern wooden base. Provenance: The statuette was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Mitchell during their visit to Cairo in February 1964. They paid an amount of $380 for it. The acquisition was done through the curator of the National Museum of Egypt, Gamel Salem, who also granted the export permission. The statuette ended up in the collection of Leighton A. Wilkie (1900-1993). During his life Wilkie invented, perfected and successfully marketed several machine tools, among them a machine called the DoALL. The same name was later given to his company, which developed into a large chain of industrial supply centers in the United States. The object will come with copies of the original documents as well as photographs taken around 1970, while it was on display at the Wilkie Brothers Foundation. Background information: Neith was an Egyptian goddess of war and of hunting with main cult centres is Sais (Delta) and Asyut (Middle Egypt). Her first appearance in Egyptian religion was rather early; her symbol appears already on stelae from the first dynasty. Her name was part of several royal names from this period as well. As a goddess of war she had to help the pharaoh during his battles, and to "open the way" for him, a function she had in common with Wepwawet; through this she also became a goddess who gave protection, and because of this was also incorporated in the group of gods who helped the deceased. Usually together with Isis, Nephthys and Serket she offered protection to the sarcophagus (already in the Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts) and to the canopic chest, containing the internal organs which had been removed during mummification. More specifically she was linked to Duamutef, one of the children of Horus, who watched over the stomach of the deceased. Neith was also associated with weaving and was believed to be the one who wove the bandages of the mummy. As the goddess of weaving she was also the protector of women as well as of marriage. Another association of the goddess was with the water of the Nile (sometimes she was called the mother of the crocodile god Sobek) and because of this was even considered to be the personification of the primeval waters of creation; she was identified with the goddess Mehetweret ("The Great Flood") and also linked to Khnum as his wife and as the source of the Nile. Neith and Khnum were seen as creator gods in the temple of Esna and even melted together into one androgynous creator god. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell. Thumbnail 14 An Egyptian Gilded Head of an Ibis Start Price: 5,000.00Estimate: 7,000.00 - 8,000.00 This wooden head with its long beak it that of an ibis, an animal considered sacred in ancient Egypt and related to Thoth, the god of writing and wisdom. The beak has incised details and the face has strong, almost piercing eyes. In some of the more wealthy offerings, like this ibis head, the whole was covered in gold leaf, because the Egyptians believed that the body of the gods was made of gold and because of the relations they saw between the head and the sun. The head once crowned a mummy bundle containing a mummified ibis. Usually such heads were attached with the head turned backwards, the beak resting on the back of the animal, as if the bird was sleeping. It was attached to the bundle by means of threads; for this purpose the ends are looped for attachment. Some traces of linen wrappings from the mummy are preserved on the bottom. Background information: he majority of the mummified animal remains from ancient Egypt are testimony to the religious phenomenon of sacred animal cults, the popularity of which increased during the seventh century B.C. and which remained active until the edict of Theodosius in AD 379. During this period, millions of birds, in particular ibises and birds of prey, were captured or bred in captivity for the sole purpose of being mummified. These mummies were made available as votive offerings to pilgrims who visited sanctuaries dedicated to falcon deities, such as Horus, and to Thoth, the ibis god. Priests from these cult centers regularly deposited the mummies in catacombs or unused tombs. Already Herodotus (Histories II, 67) wrote that, like dead cat were brought to Bubastis to be embalmed and buried, ibises were taken to Hermopolis, the major cult center of Thoth. The necropolis that was associated with this city can be found nearby, at Tuna el-Gebel. The custom of burying mummified ibises in the vast subterranean network of galleries here lasted almost 700 years. The number of ibises deposited is not known exactly but well surpasses one million. Moreover, not only Hermopolis had an animal necropolis. Many others have been uncovered throughout Egypt. The major one is located in North Saqqara, which - apart from galleries for ibises - had catacombs for the Apis bulls, for baboons, for ibises, for birds of prey, for dogs and for cats. Thumbnail 15 An Egyptian Polychrome Wood Coffin Mask - Carbon Dated! Start Price: 4,000.00Estimate: 8,000.00 - 12,000.00 Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 500 - 200 BC. Oversized carved, painted terracotta-colored face from a coffin lid; displays wide, flatly defined eyes, a slender aquiline nose with slight anatomical detail, and small, plump, pursed lips. The long, slightly arched eyebrows over heavy eyelids, outline for the eyes, and the clear, circular pupils against painted white eyeballs, are drawn in black paint. At one time the face may have had well defined ears, now missing, and possibly a chin beard. wood core is overlaid with a thinly applied layer of gesso. Gesso, a mixture of whiting and glue, when skillfully applied provides a good, smooth painting ground for artisans, particularly when working on wood. On the upper forehead and wig areas are wood plugs, one above the proper right and left eyebrows and one of mud to the right of center on the wig. Mask itself measures 16"H x 12"W x 4"D, with frame 24"W x 27"H x 3-1/2"D. Mask reassembled from three pieces, professionally conserved, mounted and framed. Radio-carbon dated to confirm age (copy of test report included with purchase). Provenance: Ex-private Ohio Collection acquired in the mid-1960s. Thumbnail 22 An Egyptian Cartonnnage Mummy Mask Start Price: 9,000.00Estimate: 12,000.00 - 15,000.00 This is a beautiful mummy mask or, more properly described, a head cover. It is a particularly fine example because of its vibrant colours. It dates to the Graeco-Roman Period, circa 1st century BC - 1st century CE. The face is characterized by large eyes and eyebrows, a small nose and a small, smiling mouth with full lips which are not painted but indicated in profile. The prominent ears are visible in front of the lappets of the tripartite wig. These lappets are falling in front of the shoulders and chest, and probably imitate hair or a headcloth, decorated with alternating yellow and blue or black stripes. A reticulated or checkerboard pattern can be seen to the left and right of the lappets as well as above the hairband. Between the lappets a broad collar is visible on the chest, displaying a decoration of lotus flowers, small circles or dots, and other elements, probably imitating strings of beads. Some water lines are also visible. Above the forehead is a diadem or striped headband, holding the wig in its place, with a central sun disc. Partly on the forehead and partly on top of the head we see the depiction of a vulture, its wings spread in a sign of protection; the animal is wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt and might therefore be a representation of the goddess Nekhbet. A sun disk can be seen near the head of the goddess. She is carrying two round objects in her talons, which are probably shen signs, symbolising eternity. From these a ribbon runs to either side, mixing with the stripes on the lappets of the wig. The mask has incredibly beautiful colours: yellow, red, brown, white, black, green and blue. Under magnification the ground grains of the minerals are clearly visible, especially a beautiful, dark deep blue. Very prominent is the use of yellow. This colour was often used to replace the much more expensive gilding (or gold) that can sometimes be seen on funerary masks. The use of gold or gold leaf was connected to the belief that the sun god Re, with whom the deceased hoped to be united, had flesh of pure gold, and to the fact that gold does not tarnish, therefore guaranteeing immortal life. Background information: Ancient Egyptian cartonnage was made from layers of linen or papyrus, which were coated with gesso and then painted. It was used to make masks, covering only the head or also the upper body, foot cases, symbolic plaques and even full body covers which were attached to the mummy. During the manufacturing process moist layers of adhesive-soaked linen and gesso (which was either calcium carbonate based or calcium sulphate based) were moulded into the desired shape, usually over a mould. Once it had hardened, the gessoed surface was smoothed before paint or even gold leaf was applied. Mummy masks were principally used to protect the face of the deceased, but they could also act as a substitute for the mummified head in case that should be lost or damaged. The ancient Egyptians believed that the ba (often incorrectly translated as “spirit”) could leave the tomb and travel freely in the world of the living. To make sure that upon returning it would recognize the mummy, whose face was hidden by layers of bandage, the mask functioned as a portrait. Nevertheless, most masks had idealized features and were rarely particularized portraits. Provenance: Dutch private collection E.B.; previously collection Hirsch, Germany (2006); previously German private collection, acquired around 1975. Approximate dimensions: Height 43 cm, width 27 cm, depth 21 cm. As is the case with many masks made of cartonnage, which is a relatively fragile material, the mask was slightly bent, due to the conditions in which it has been for two millennia and possibly due to the loss of support somewhere during that time. This had an effect on the layer of hardened gesso, causing some breaks - luckily unimportant ones - and the loss of small fragments of gesso. The mask has been professionally treated to bring back its original shape, and treated with paraloid for stabilisation; a few small loose fragments have been reattached and the small breaks in the stucco layer realigned, introducing an adhesive; one small area of the stucco layer is missing, ca 7.5 x 2.2 cm maximum, near the lower end of the broad collar; a few small areas where the black paint was worn have been touched up, especially on the wig on the back side; during inspection under ultraviolet light it was shown that this only applies to a small part of the mask; part of the lines indicating the right ear missing; the proper left shoulder is still bent inward; the lower end of the back side is damaged, as shown, but this is normally not noticeable when the mask is put on display. In spite of this long list of (small) defects, which might give the impression that the mask is poorly preserved, the mask is in very good condition overall. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell. To place a bid on this auction lot, please contact us at antiquitiessaleroom@gmail.com

Thumbnail 28 A South Arabian Plaque with the Head of a Bull Start Price: 6,500.00Estimate: 8,000.00 - 8,500.00 This rectangular plaque, coming from the ancient South Arabian kingdom of Qataban and dating to the early 1st century C.E., shows the head of a bull in high relief, projecting from the slab; the head has striated markings, emphasising the wrinkles on the bull’s head. The animal’s eyes are engraved, and the pupils are drilled, possibly for inlays. The ears are visible behind the horns. This well sculpted head is thought to have come from Jabal Hayd Ibn Aqil, the necropolis located in the wadi Bayhan, a short distance north of Timna, the capital of Qataban. Representations of bulls are frequently attested in the funerary art there; usually only the bull’s head is shown, mounted on a plaque and executed in remarkably realistic detail, observing strict frontality. Such stelae were inserted into niches in the tombs. The presence of these representations of the bull verifies the great significance of the animal in the religious thought of the ancient Qatabanians, although what the association was is not clearly understood. There is no inscription on this stela, which prevents our knowing to which god it was dedicated. The bull was, however, the symbol of the god Almaqah. Like in Canaanite religion (another ancient Semitic culture) the bull was associated primarily with a particular deity, but was apparently not considered to be sacred in itself (see Cleveland 1965, p. 36). Originally the plaque may have been larger; it was reduced in size at some point. Funerary sculptures from this area were frequently carved from a fine-grained translucent yellowish stone which resembles alabaster. Analysis of some 400 objects in the British Museum has revealed that none of them were actually made of true alabaster but most were made from varieties of calcite (St John Simpson 2002, p. 191). Thumbnail 30 A Greek Mycenaean Stirrup Vessel Start Price: 850.00Estimate: 2,000.00 - 2,500.00 Greece, Late Helladic IIIA, ca. 1400-1300 BC. Pottery stirrup vessel of squat broad form with concentric rings and geometric designs painted in brown slip. Unique in form, stirrup jars were first produced in Crete towards the end of the Middle Minoan Period (1700-1550 B.C.). This unusual pottery type is also known as the “false neck amphora” because what should function as the vessel’s mouth between two handles is a false spout that is capped by a clay disk, the liquid actually pouring from a spout on the shoulder of the vase. The stirrup jar is particularly suited for the transport and pouring of liquids – the false spout and stirrup handles are well designed for holding, while the narrow neck of the true spout allowed for easy control of the liquid’s flow. The small spout of the stirrup jar would also have been easy to seal up for transport and to prevent the scent of perfumed oil from evaporating. 4-1/4"H x 4-1/2"W. Intact with minor chipping and overall surface wear, as shown. Confer: L. Marangou, Ancient Greek Art: the N. P. Goulandris Collection, (Athens, 1985), p. 40, no. 21. Provenance: Ex-prominent New York City Gallery. Authenticity Guaranteed The starting price is the price at which the item can sell. Pottery pouring jug adorned with painted scrolls indicating a wave (sea) motif. Red quadra-linear band is painted around middle of jug, smaller red bands run parallel at the neck and base. Stands 8"H. Intact/excellent condition, save some slight surface wear. Provenance: Ex-prominent New York City Gallery. Thumbnail 31A A Large Greek Cypriot Barrel-Shaped Jar Start Price: 3,750.00Estimate: 5,000.00 - 5,500.00 This is a large pottery jar with a spherical, barrel shaped body from Cyprus, dating to the Cypro-Geometric period, circa 1050-750 B.C. The body, made of white painted ware, is slightly pointed at each end, with a low relief nipple in the center of a geometric decoration consisting of concentric circle "targets" (the reason why these vessels are also described as target vessels). Other decoration, all strictly geometric and symmetrical, consists of two bands of concentric rings around the body, made of lines of varying thickness, another band around the neck, and cross-hatched lozenge motifs on the shoulder and beneath the handle. The vessel has a slender neck with a flared rim. Barrel shaped jugs were common in ancient Cyprus. They do not stand on their own, so they must have served a specific function. It has been suggested that their use was purely funerary, since they were found in tombs mainly in eastern Cyprus. Literature: For the shape of the vessel see for instance Vassos Karageorghis, Ancient Art from Cyprus. The Cesnola Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, 2000) p. 100, no. 159 (differently decorated and from a slightly younger period); for the type of geometric decoration see ibid., p. 82-83, nos. 131, 133 and p. 92-93, nos. 145, 148. Height: ca. 20 cm (just shy of 8"H). Intact with no repairs or restoration; some expected general surface wear including minor chipping and scratching; the surface presents traces of white and grey encrustation and root marks throughout. Provenance: Swiss private collection of A. Branca, Ascona, acquired between 1960 and 1980. Authenticity Guaranteed The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.

Thumbnail 37 A Greek Attic Red Figure Askos Start Price: 3,500.00Estimate: 5,000.00 - 6,000.00 Another rare and desirable form! Ancient Greek Attic, reputedly found in Cyprus, ca. 450 B.C. Decorated with a delicately painted scene showing winged Eros, in mid-flight as he swoops down to Earth, right, with raised wings, his right arm outstretched as he chases a wild Hare, bounding across the ground. In ancient Greece, the Hare was associated with virility and sexual desire due to its perceived high libido, and was therefore a common token of erotic love from a man to his lover. Possibly from the Charmides Painter (similar example / style of painting in the British Museum). 2-1/2"H x 4"D. Thumbnail 38 An Attic Red Figure Cup by the Heraion Painter Start Price: 23,500.00Estimate: 28,000.00 - 35,000.00 This is a wonderful and important object, decorated by a well known painter. The piece is published and has a great provenance. It is an Attic cup, deep and with an offset lip, resting on a short stem. Under the foot, which is glazed, a Greek graffito can be seen, consisting of the letters BY. The scene on the cup, placed inside the tondo, is most interesting. Depicted is a satyr with a rather savage look in his eye, and with long, waving hair, a beard with the long hairs indicated by stripes, and a long tail. He is depicted in a kneeling position, seen in three-quarter view to the right. His face is rendered in strict profile, but his torso is shown full front as are the toes of his right foot. Suspended in front of him is a flute-case, which indicates that music is implied. This music probably also accounts for the position of his arms, which are flung out as if the satyr is dancing. The whole scene is surrounded by a border of ovolos, which is uncommon. Normally there is a single reserved line. The Heraion painter was so named after a work created by him that was found in the Heraion of Delos (Delos 658). He was a member of the circle of the Pythos painter, famed for his sketch-like relief lines and abstraction. He worked ca. 510-500 BC. For the painter see Beazley (1963), volume 1, p. 142-144 (Book II, Early Red-Figure Cup-Painters, Chapter 11 – The Coarser Wing II); volume 2, p. 1628. See also Beazley (1939), p. 2, who identified a fragment of an Attic cup, found in Al-Mina, comparing it with parallels in New York and Würzburg as well as the cup fragment Acropolis 131. All show the same motif of a satyr with a flute-case. See also Stewart and Martin (2005), p. 83. For cups with this subject by the Heraion painter see Beazley (1963), I, p. 143, nos. 12, 13, 15, 17 (satyr kneeling); nos. 1, 5, 7 (youth kneeling with flute-case); nos. 14, 16 (satyr kneeling with flute-case). Our cup is no. 14 in the publication by Beazley, although the description he gives in not entirely correct: he says that the flute-case is in the left hand of the satyr rather than suspended in front of him. Another cup with offset lip and with a close parallel for subject, composition and style of drawing has been on the Swiss market, showing a kneeling satyr in almost mirror reverse, with a flute-case suspended from the border of the tondo. This cup has been in the collection of Pierre Devambez, who was the chief curator of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, in the Louvre museum, Paris, which not only makes an excellent provenance but is also extra testimony of the authenticity of the piece. Published: Beazley (1963), volume I, p. 143, nos. 14 Provenance: Dutch private collection; previously French private collection of Pierre Devambez (1937-1973); previously French art market, Mikas, Paris, prior to 1963. Width 22.3 cm including handles, height 7.9 cm. Repaired from a few large fragments; some of the usual surface wear and scratches, common to all ancient pottery; small area at the centre of the tondo where the glazed surface is slightly corroded; very small part of the glaze on the inside with a slightly brownish colour instead of black, due to firing conditions. Overall in excellent condition and with a very interesting decoration. Literature: John D. Beazley, "Excavations at Al Mina, Sueidia. III. Thumbnail 41 A Greek Paestan Red-Figure Lekanis Start Price: 1,600.00Estimate: 2,500.00 - 3,000.00 An elegantly shaped and beautifully decorated small lekanis from Paestum, dating to circa 340-320 BC. The lid shows the red-figure painted head of a so-called lady of fashion, facing left and wearing a saccos. The opposite side shows a bird, which has been described as a swan in the publication but looks more like a dove (other vessels from the region sometimes also depict birds, such as thrushes). The way the animal's eye is depicted on our lekanis gives it a comical look, probably unintended, as if the bird is on its guard, glancing at the onlooker with suspicion. Palmettes are shown between the two scenes, and circular patterns are seen in the fields. The knob of the lid has a palmette and dots decoration as well as an encircling line, and there is a wave motif around the rim of the lid. The bowl has a pedestal and two opposing loop handles at the rim. It has a decoration of lines or rays. The fingers prints of the ancient potter can still be observed in the areas where he attached the handles to the bowl. Published: Art of the Ancient World, volume 15 (New York, Beverly Hills, London, Royal-Athena Galleries, 2004), no. 106. Width 14.9 cm including handles, diameter of body 10.4 cm on the outside and 8.7 on the inside, height 9.0 cm. Intact. A few minuscule chips to the rim of the bowl and one to the rim of the lid (all of them a few mm only and none of them distracting at all), a small area of roughness to the rim of the bowl, tiny spots where the glaze was lost, all as visible on the photographs; in excellent condition overall. A wonderful vessel. Provenance: Dutch private collection; previously with Royal-Athena Galleries, 2004; previously US private collection, New York, acquired in Lugano, Switzerland, in April 1992. Background information: Paestum is located south of Naples, in the Campania region of southern Italy. It was founded around 600 B.C. by the Greeks of Sybaris, who called the place Poseidonia. The workshops there began the production of vases around 380-370 B.C. under the influence of potters and painters of Sicilian origin. The painter Asteas, whose left his signature on several vases he created, introduced the particularities that characterize this local style. He and his disciple Python are considered the master painters from Paestum. Authenticity Guaranteed The starting price is the price at which the item can sell. Thumbnail 42 A Greek Apulian Red Figure Pelike Amphora Start Price: 4,000.00Estimate: 8,000.00 - 10,000.00 Greek, from southern Italy, Apulian region, ca. 330 BC. Black-glazed pottery vessel done in red figure technique, used for storing wine; with ring base, sagging belly, short neck, bilateral strap handles and everted lip. Side 'A' depicts an unusual and highly intricate scene - a central female bust of a young woman surrounded by a mass of tendrils, blossoming flowers and thick vegetation. The young woman with necklace and phrygian type hat, emerging from a central white flower. Palmettes and dotted ovolo above. Side 'B' shows winged Eros wearing sandals, large necklace, bracelets, saccos, stephane and anklets. He holds an open wreath and olive branch, his beautiful long wings slightly parted as he walks left, looking back over his shoulder at a himatianclad lady of fashion. The lady of fashion, walking left, presenting patera in right hand and holding wreath with left, she wears necklace and bracelets with her hair tied up, decorated with white ribbons. Palmettes between two scenes and wave meander below. In red figure art, the ancient potter applied the figural decoration while the pot was leather hard, with a thin clay slip orengobe. After the figures were painted with the engobe, the pot was fired, first in a high oxygen kiln, then in low and high oxygen environments. The complex oxidation-reduction - reoxidation process created the striking red-figures on a glossy black background. Pelike stands 10-1/2"H. Thumbnail 60 An Early Roman Bronze Hinged Mirror - Scientifically Tested Start Price: 2,800.00Estimate: 5,000.00 - 5,500.00 A wonderful and rare early Roman bronze, dating between the 1st century B.C. and the 1st century CE. This two-part mirror consists of two hinged circular discs, lathe-turned and with raised lips, which nest together when the mirror is closed to protect the reflecting surface. The exterior surfaces are decorated with incised concentric rings. The interiors were polished to function as mirrors, and still retain a small amount of the original silvered surface. Each half of the mirror has an omega-shaped handle on the exterior, at the side opposite the hinge. The handle on the upper disc is inserted through loops at the top of two appliqués, both shaped like theatre masks with fine facial detail and each wearing a diadem. Very rare and very nice! Background information: The hinged mirror probably originated in fourth-century Greece and soon after made its way to Etruria. Its popularity continued in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The object opened to expose a round mirror, usually either silvered or tinned, on the lower surface. Although polished, the upper surface probably did not serve as a second mirror but as a reflector to cast light on the viewer's face. The mirror was slightly convex, which served to diminish the reflected image somewhat, so that the viewer's head and shoulders might also be seen, rather than just the face. In the absence of full-length mirrors, this would have been quite useful. The upper surface was slightly concave, so that it did not touch the mirror surface when closed (see Berlin and Biers, 2004). Hayes (1984, p. 188-190) distinguishes larger sized mirrors (with an average diameter of 15 cm), which mainly date to Roman Imperial periods, and smaller sized ones, which are mostly earlier. For a bronze statuette of Amor, holding out a folding mirror to a beholder who is not depicted, but could possibly be Venus, see Thorvaldsens Museum, Kopenhagen, Denmark, inv. no. H2055. Test results: A couple of years ago this mirror was scientifically investigated, not because there were doubts about its authenticity but to add the composition spectra to a database of authentic objects. These tests were completely non-destructive. They were done at the Department of Nuclear Research, Institute of Isotopes, Budapest (Hungary). No irregularities or indications of forgery were found. The elemental composition is consistent with what is known from other objects from the same period. The tests confirmed the authenticity of the object. Size: diameter of each disk ca. 8.5 cm; when completely opened no less than 23 cm from handle to handle. Complete, intact and choice with a beautiful dark-green patina; some deposits on the interior, as shown. A wonderful are rare object! Provenance: Dutch private collection H.B.; previously German private collection, acquired circa 1960-1965. Literature: Andrea Berlin - Jane C. Biers, Testament of Time. Strigils were used in combination with olive oil and sand or pumice to exfoliate the skin after exercising or bathing. The strigil was an essential piece of equipment for the Greek and Roman athlete and as such came to symbolize athleticism itself. Thumbnail 92 A Neo-Elamite Bronze Beaker Start Price: 10,000.00Estimate: 15,000.00 - 20,000.00 This is an absolutely wonderful bronze beaker from ancient western Iran and dating to the 9th-8th century B.C. The beaker has a slender and cylindrical shape with gently curving concave sides and a tapering base that terminates in a “nipple”, a central knob on the bottom surrounded by twelve petals of a rosette. It is because of this knob that Muscarella (1988, p. 245) suggested to call objects like this a “nipple beaker” (German: Knopfbecher) instead of situla, as has been (and still is) customary; the term situla should only be used for buckets with handles. The central field has a marvellous scene, showing two goats leaping over a rock while looking back; flowers are depicted on the rocks, and a hanging lotus blossom is shown above the rear ends of the goats. The rendering of the anatomy of the animals, their fur and the structure of the horns is beautifully detailed. The picture field is framed by a tongued frieze above and below; there is also an interlacing pattern (guilloche) around the rim. For decorated beakers and the discussions concerning these, see Muscarella (1988), p. 244-248. For a close parallel to our beaker, although showing different animals (human-headed bulls) but with the same lay-out (a rim decorated by a guilloche and tongue pattern, the base decorated by a framed tongue pattern that borders a rosette, the centre of which is a nipple, animals facing each other, stylized plants, a plant suspended from the upper border above the animals’ rear ends) compare ibid., no. 343 (which is Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv.no. 1971.129), as well as Moorey (1971), p. 270 and pl. 81, no. 516 (Ashmolean Museum Oxford, inv.no. 1965.822, showing winged bulls), and especially Contenau (1947), p. 2172, fig. 1208, top right (a goat, similarly looking backwards but being hunted). Thumbnail 93 World-Class Cuneiform Biscuit - King Nebuchadnezzar II Start Price: 2,500.00Estimate: 4,000.00 - 5,000.00 Ancient city of Babylon, (630-562 BC), 85 kilometers south of Bagdad, Iraq. An incredibly detailed administrative or commercial tablet, written dated during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II in 556 BC. Cuneiform receipt with over 35 lines of script in crisp detail translated as follows: Cuneiform Tablet dating to Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon year 25 = 579 BC Concerning Rental Taxes from lands of the Eanna Temple in Uruk The tablet is c. 80% preserved, missing the obv. lower left one-sixth = rev. upper left., a piece off the rev. right side, and a few areas of surface damage. The text records the decision of the senior administrators of the Eanna Temple in Uruk regarding the (rental) taxes that an individual is required to produce from various land holdings of the temple for the year. The officials themselves take responsibility for some part of the tax. The agreement concludes with a list of seven witnesses and the scribe, the name of the city Uruk, and the date. Though most of the text is preserved, much of it is taken with enumeration of field names and the names of witnesses, while much of the section containing the main substance of the agreement is missing, thus the most of the rental terms are unknown. The business of the Eanna Temple and the Lady-of-Uruk (Ishtar) in the Neo-Babylonian period are well-documented by many other tablets, and research into this large group of tablets by a specialist will likely produce some related texts. On the lower edge of the tablet is a faded ink inscription in English, written in an old fashioned hand: “40th year of Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon” and “565 BC.” This is curious, as the tablet is very clearly written “year 25” (which would be 579 BC). Perhaps the description was mixed up with that of another tablet. In any event, the handwriting indicates that this tablet derives from a very old collection. Nergal-tesi-etir, son of Zabida, stated thus to Ninurta-shar-usur, the qipu-official of the Eanna Temple, Marduk-belshunu, the chief administrator (satammu) of the Eanna Temple, (and) Nabu-ahhe-uballit, the official secretary (tupsarru “scribe”) of the Eanna Temple: The land holdings of the (temple of) the Lady-of-Uruk (that is): the irrigation district Angillum the irrigation district Qatnu (of the) town Lasutu the irrigation district … as far as the irrigation district of (Til)-hurasi (erasure) the Harru canal of Gubba (in the) town Kar-Eanna the New Canal (in) the irrigation district Mahallu the Harru Canal Shalammu (in) the town Shanapu the irrigation district Asuritu the irrigation district Nasira(?) the irrigation district Birata (of) the town Bit-Diraa (and) Bit-sha…sha, the threshing place of [the Lady-of-Uruk] The land holdings of Bit-Amukanu which the cultivating farmers and the … farmers… [as much as ?] there is, I will deliver from month XII, year 25 of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, yearly the full amount 9 1/3 kor of barley from the Eanna Temple to the Lady-of-Uruk. Modelled as a figure of a male warrior, standing upright with legs and arms apart. Face details in high relief, while lines on body are incised; hair depicted long and braided. The Haniwa (clay image) can be traced back to the sixth century when it was a most flourishing era and further yet to the fourth century when it appears to have had its first origin. The Haniwa can be found in various figures and shapes, such as houses, horses, dogs, birds, and portraits. Though somewhat coarsely made, their bold crudeness commands a certain respect. One cannot but feel the warm affection glowing and their faces bring us into close contact with the people of that age, with their ideas concerning men, and give us a little insight into the pleasure they must have taken in living. The artistic value of the Haniwa are held in high esteem not only by Japanese, but also by many foreigners all over the world. 10"H x 6"W. Intact/excellent condition, save minor surface wear. Thumbnail 144 A Pre-Columbian Nazca Vase w/ Trophy Heads Start Price: 175.00Estimate: 250.00 - 450.00 From the Nazca culture of Pre-Columbian Peru, circa 100 A.D. - 300 A.D. Cylindrical vase featuring painted designs of trophy heads around the rim, Measuring approximately 5 1/2" tall and 4" wide, this short vase approaches the form of what Kroeber refers to as a waisted goblet, since the form tapers in near the top before slightly flaring out again at the rim. The vase features dull red and rust colored painted stripes near the mid section, and what are likely painted depictions of trophy heads in black/dark chocolate brown against a white background near the rim. The heads are thought by most to be depicted as resting on feathers. Other interpretations suggest the heads may be depicted as resting on hair hanks, paws, or peppers. It is of importance to note that these same trophy-head-like designs are also frequently depicted on Nazca female figures and effigy bottles, where they are shown as tattoos. These depictions are only known to occur on depictions of females, so the symbolic importance of what they may represent on the vases, vessels and figures is unknown at present. Intact with no repairs or restoration. Minor wear and mineral deposits attest to the age and authenticity of this piece. Provenance: Former private Florida collection. Thumbnail 161 A Moche Florero Start Price: 9,800.00Estimate: 12,000.00 - 15,000.00 This is a stunning piece of Moche art, very large and decorated with most interesting scenes. It dates to the Middle Moche period, ca. 200-500 C.E. and has a star provenance. Flared bowls like this, usually called a florero, often include a rattle: they have a hollow pedestal base with a few small openings, filled with ceramic pellets that make a rattling sound when the vessel is shaken. The same applies to our vessel. The outside of the base is painted a brownish red and is decorated with several instances of the so-called step motif in which the hypotenuse of a triangle consists of steps. These are probably a symbol for the mountain and/or the temple. The outside of the flaring part of the vessel is painted with a cream engobe and has a horizontal band in red-brown. The most interesting part is the inside; vessels like this were almost invariably painted inside the rim. On our bowl the decoration is rather complex. There is a whole frieze of mythical or fantastic creatures and aquatic motifs. The centre of the scene is a shaman, standing with wide open mouth. He wears a head band with two protruding elements, possibly feathers; another band around his waist ends in two dotted ribbons which both terminate in an animal head. The shaman is engaged in fishing by means of a long rope, one end of which also terminates in an animal head, whereas a large hook is fixed to the other end. He has just caught a huge and quite impressing fish, the body of which is decorated with short stripes, probably indicating the scales. The remainder of the frieze is filled with several fish, some of which have a savage looking head. Some bird-like creatures, rwo of them clothed and with wings, are watching. Spectacular! Provenance: Dutch private collection, acquired at Christie’s Paris, sale 5094 of 8 December 2004, lot 327; previously German private collection of Dr. Hans Dietrich Disselhof (1899-1975; he was a scholar who wrote many books on the Pre-Columbian world, and was director of the Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin, Germany), acquired in the 1950s. Dimensions: Height 28.5 cm, diameter of bowl 31 cm. Some repair to the base with no new material, just reglued and repainted over the breaks; a few breaks in the flaring rim reglued with no new material; a little bit of repainting in the sinuous body of the fish and by the hand of the shaman holding the lasso. Else in excellent condition with a lovely brown, orange and cream engobe and brown-red engobe decorations. A highly desirable piece! Literature: See Christopher B. Donnan, Moche Art of Peru. Pre-Columbian Symbolic Communication (Los Angeles, Museum of Cultural History, University of California, 1978), fig. 70 for similar finely decorated vessels. Thumbnail 162 A Moche Macabre Skeletal Vessel Start Price: 1,900.00Estimate: 3,000.00 - 4,000.00 This is a very remarkable and rather macabre vessel from Peru. It dates to the Moche IV phase, circa 500 CE. The unusual scene depicts two skeletal figures. The larger one rests his left hand on the head of the smaller figure (a child?). Both individuals are painted white, and care was taken to add small details, such as the incised ribs, hollow eyes and fingers. The figures are shown squatting on top of an orange coloured terracotta vessel which is footed and has a globular shape. There is a phase IV stirrup spout at the back. Two old inventory numbers are written on the bottom, reading DMM 67 and 71.93. Background information: Although relatively rare, depictions of skeletal individuals can sometimes be found on Moche ceramics. It has been suggested that they symbolise the spiritual complementarity between life and death. Moche religion knew a transitory stage between life and death, of which transitional beings such as the animated deceased were manifestations. In art these can be seen engaged in sexual activities, embracing, making music and dancing and other scenes. Possibly the combination of a skeletal adult and a child illustrates death as a necessary stage for the renewal of life. Parallels: For a differently shaped vessel with a similar scene in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (showing two adult skeletons and a child) see "Bottle, Skeletal Couple with Child [Peru, Moche] (1978.412.196)", in Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History (New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2009, revised April 2010). Literature: For the theme of skeletons in Moche art in general see Steve Bourget, Sex, Death, and Sacrifice in Moche Religion and Visual Culture (University of Texas Press, 2006). Height ca. 22.8 cm. In excellent condition; a few miniscule chips to the footed base and the stirrup spout; some surface wear and scratches; a small spot of what is probably spilt (ancient?) paint halfway on the spout; the larger figure has a small round opening on his left cheek and shows some minor paint flaking.

Thumbnail 182 A Pre-Columbian Middle Cauca Effigy Vase, Colombia Start Price: 350.00Estimate: 500.00 - 850.00 A finely rendered example of a relatively rare type of effigy vessel from the Pre-Columbian Middle Cauca Complex of ancient Colombia, circa 1000 A.D. – 1500 A.D. This bi-chrome vessel displays impressively, measuring approximately 8 ¾” tall by about 6 ½” wide. The form tapers from the bottom up, transitioning to a smaller section, upon which is depicted human-like facial features- including ears, eyes, mouth and a prominent nose with a nose ornament. The coffee-bean style eyes imply a squinting, puffy quality, perhaps indicative of an individual or deity in a trance or altered state of consciousness. The shoulders of the vessel also feature small adornos that appear to be zoomorphic in form, as if they are gripping the sides, emerging head first from the vessel. Reference: See Labbe’s book “Colombia Before Columbus” for similar examples and scholarly information. In excellent, original condition, with no restoration. There is a small area of ancient loss (only about ¾” wide) on one side of the bottom edge, with some ancient erosion to the surrounding surface of the lower base. There is ancient abrasion to the tip of the nose, and minor areas of abrasions, chips, weathering and wear overall. Ample mineral and sediment deposits inside and out attest to the age and authenticity of this piece. Provenance: Former Florida, USA private collection. Thumbnail 186 A Large Pre-Columbian Michoacan Incense Cover Start Price: 300.00Estimate: 400.00 - 750.00 Pre-Columbian, from the Michoacan region of ancient Mexico, ca. 200 B.C.- 200 A.D. This example measures impressively at about 8 ½” tall by about 7” wide. It depicts a heavily adorned female emerging from the dome-like cover, perhaps representing a skirt-like garment, suggested by the striped patterns around the dome. She is shown wearing ear spools, and a large neck ornament, as well as a decorative headband. Such objects are believed to have been used as covers over burning incense, designed to allow limited airflow by means of short tripod feet at the base. The dome-like form was intended to retain heat within, allowing the burning incense offering to smolder, emitting smoke out from beneath the bottom edge. One can imagine smoke rising around the body of the cover, giving the illusion that the human form finial is emerging out of the smoke from the incense offering. Perhaps the image is that of a deceased ancestor for whom an offering would have been made. In remarkable, original condition, with no restoration and no repair. Excellent black Manganese blooms and other mineral deposits cover the surface inside and out. There are only minor surface abrasions, chips, weathering and wear overall. Evidence of ancient, likely ritual, use exists in the form of black soot build-up underneath within the interior and around the side edges from where incense was burned beneath in ancient times. A large and hollow statuette from Jalisco, dating to the protoclassic period, circa 100 BC - 200 CE, displaying wonderful details. Jalisco is one of the states in western Mexico from which ceramics of the period come. Its sculpture, most of which was once placed in a shaft-and-chamber tomb, is noted for a very specific style, which can also be seen on this statuette. The elongated head has a large nose with drilled nostrils, prominent ears (the right also drilled to indicate the opening of the ear; the left one without such an opening), wide open and staring eyes, and an open mouth displaying two rows of teeth. His tall, elaborate headdress, with a flap protecting the neck, is adorned with several straps. The round, exaggerated shoulders are surfaced with small circular pellets that have been interpreted as scarification patterns or tattoos. Many of these characteristics were markers of high rank. The person depicted is wearing a kind of short trousers. He is leaning forward, supporting himself on the club he is holding with both hands. The statuette is painted in cream and deep orange. Approximate dimensions: height 39.5 cm, width 22 cm, depth 28 cm. Professionally repaired from a few large pieces; some surface wear and unimportant surface damage as shown; a small and shallow chip on the right heel (ca 7 mm); some damage to the back of the headdress and its "crest", probably caused when the statue was lying on its back, putting too much stress on this part of the headdress. Much of the original colours remaining. A fabulous piece with vibrant colours! Thumbnail 210 A Pre-Columbian Maya Ulua Cylinder, Mythical Birds Start Price: 650.00Estimate: 850.00 - 1,300.00 A large Maya footed polychrome cylinder of a type representative of the ancient Ulua Valley region of Honduras, circa 600 A.D. - 900 A.D. This example measures approximately 7" wide by about 5 1/2" tall, and depicts an interesting scene showing two supernatural bird figures, each with objects in their mouths, separated by K'in flowers. The scenes likely relate to a story from Maya mythology, and may even serve as a metaphor for some cosmic or celestial event interpreted by the ancient Maya as having spiritual or symbolic importance. Decorative features are shown using black, red, yellow and orange pigments, inside and out. The form of the vessel is that of a short, wide cylinder that sits atop three slab, type feet. Intact, with only a few minor, stable hairlines- typical from compression during hundreds of years of burial. The details of the scenes remain easily discernible. Heavy black Manganese deposits, as well as other mineral deposits, encrustations and root marks, attest to the age and authenticity of this example. There is heavy mineral encrustation and residue on the inside, perhaps related to whatever the vessel once contained. Otherwise, only minor abrasions, weathering and wear overall.
