This "Lost Wax" casting method is an extremely labor intensive and expensive process, but the end results produce a Heirloom Quality Masterpiece! Pierre Jules Mêne, (1810 -1879), was a FrenchSculptor andanimalière. He is considered the pioneer of animal sculpture in the nineteenth-century.Mêne produced a number of animal sculptures, mainly of domestic animals including horses, cows and bulls, sheep and goats which were in vogue during the Second Empire. He was one of a school of French animalières which also included Rosa Bonheur, Pierre Louis Rouillard, Antoine-Louis Barye, Auguste Caïn, and François Pompon. His work was first shown in London by Ernest Gambart in 1849. Mêne specialized in small bronze figures which explains why none of his works exist as public statuary. His work was a popular success with the bourgeois class and many editions of each sculpture were made, often to decorate an increasing number of private homes of the period. The quality of these works is high, comparable to Barye's. Mêne also seems to have enjoyed a longer period of success and celebrity than his contemporaries. He is considered to have been the lost-wax casting expert of his time, later surpassed only by Auguste Rodin.

This "Lost Wax" casting method is an extremely labor intensive and expensive process, but the end results produce a Heirloom Quality Masterpiece!Antoine-louis Barye (1796 - 1875) Originally trained as a goldsmith, Antoine-Louis Barye served in Napoleon's army before studying sculpture and painting. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1818 and adapted the romantic-style subject matter of violent and majestic animals. After his crocodile-like sculpture entitled Tiger Devouring a Gavail, won a medal at the Salon of 1831, Barye became a successful and independent sculptor and painter. His animal sculptures competed at the Salon alongside the more traditional and revered human figures. In 1845, Barye began a foundry that produced smaller and more affordable bronze statues. He was appointed the keeper of plaster casts at the Louvre and professor of zoological drawing at the Musee National d'Histoire Naturelle, both in Paris. Elected to the Academie in 1868, Barye inspired a later generation of animal sculptors who called themselves the animaliers. The moose (North America) or common elk (Europe), Alces alces, is the largest extant species in thedeer family. Moose are distinguished by the palmate antlers of the males; other members of the family have antlers with a "twig-like" configuration.

The"Lost Wax" Cast method is the most precise metal casting technique in existence, ensuring exquisite detail of the original host model which is usually sculpted in clay or wax. This "Lost Wax" casting method is an extremely labor intensive and expensive process, but the end results produce a Heirloom Quality Masterpiece!Pierre Jules Mêne, (1810 -1879), was a French Sculptor and animalière.

Start Price: 25.00Estimate: 50.00 - 75.00
Sahara Neolithic point, measures approx 1 inch. The Sahara wasn't always the desert it is today. It goes through wet and dry phases lasting thousands of years, with shorter phases in between. There were three races of people who inhabited the Neolithic Sahara. Some were of caucasian stock who came from the East through what is now Egypt, and possibly from the North across the water from what is now Spain. Others were dark-skinned Africans of negroid stock who entered the Sahara from the South. And from the Mediterranean coast of North Africa came the mechtoids who were neither caucasoid nor negroid, but probably of Aterian descent. Left behind, from these early civilizations is a treasure trove of stone tools, weapons, rock art, pottery, pipes, beads, bracelets, metals, glass, spindle whorls ? relics from daily life as well as fossils, shark's teeth, shells and traces of marine life. This "Lost Wax" casting method is an extremely labor intensive and expensive process, but the end results produce a Heirloom Quality Masterpiece!Demetre Chiparus - The first sculptures of Chiparus were created in the realistic style and were exhibited at the Salon of 1914. He employed the combination of bronze and ivory, called chryselephantine, to great effect. Most of his renowned works were made between 1914 and 1933. The first series of sculptures manufactured by Chiparus were the series of the children. The mature style of Chiparus took shape beginning in the 1920s. His sculptures are remarkable for their bright and outstanding decorative effect. Dancers of the Russian Ballet, French theatre, and early motion pictures were among his more notable subjects and were typified by a long, slender, stylized appearance. His work was influenced by an interest in Egypt, after Pharaoh Tutankhamen's tomb was excavated. He worked primarily with the Edmond Etling and Cie Foundry in Paris administrated by Julien Dreyfus. Les Neveux de J. Lehmann was the second foundry who constantly worked with Chiparus and produced the sculptures of his models. Chiparus rarely exhibited at the Salon. In 1923 he showed his "Javelin Thrower" and in 1928 exhibited his "Ta-Keo" dancer. During the period of Nazi persecution and the World War 2 the foundries discontinued production of work by Chiparus. The economic situation of that time was not favorable to the development of decorative arts and circumstances for many sculptors worsened.Since the early 1940s almost no works of Chiparus were sold but the he continued sculpting for his own pleasure, depicting animals in the Art Deco style. At the 1942 Paris Salon, the plaster sculptures "Polar Bear" and "American Bison" were exhibited and in 1943 he showed a marble "Polar Bear" and plaster "Pelican".Collector interest in the work of Chiparus appeared in the 1970s and has flourished since the 1990s.

This "Lost Wax" casting method is an extremely labor intensive and expensive process, but the end results produce a Heirloom Quality Masterpiece!A matador or torero is the main performer in bullfighting events in Spain, France, and other Spanish-speaking countries. He or she is the person who performs with and kills the bull. The role is also called toreador in English (and in Bizet's opera Carmen), but this term (older than torero) is actually never used in Spain or in Latin America. The term torero encompasses bullfighters who fight the bull in the ring (picadores and rejoneadores).Usually, toreros start fighting young bulls (novillos or, more informally in some Latin American countries, vaquillas), and are called novilleros. They can start fighting mature bulls after a special match, called "the Alternative". At this bullfight the novillero (junior bullfighter) is presented to the crowd as a matador de toros. Bullfighting is traditionally a male sport. A very small number of women have been matadors and cavaleiras (in Portugal), a recent example being Cristina Sánchez. Female matadors have experienced considerable resistance and hostility from aficionados and other (male) matadors.

The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) or hippo, hippos, riverhorse, is a large, mostly plant-eating mammal in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other is thePygmy Hippopotamus). The hippopotamus is the heaviest extant artiodactyl, despite being considerably shorter than the giraffe. This compound word is the wrong way round for Greek and correctly would mean "horse-river". The more common Ancient Greek term was ?pp?? p?taµ?? "horse of river",The hippopotamus is semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers and lakes where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of 5 to 30 females and young. During the day they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grass. While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land.Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about million years ago.The common ancestor of whales and hippos split from other even-toed ungulates around million years ago. The earliest known hippopotamus fossils, belonging to the genus Kenyapotamusin Africa, date to around million years ago.The hippopotamus is recognizable by its barrel-shaped torso, enormous mouth and teeth, nearly-hairless body, stubby legs and tremendous size. It is the third-largest land mammal by weight (between 1½ and 3½ tons), behind the white rhinoceros (1½ to 4 tons) and elephants (3 to 7 tons). Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun a human. Hippos have been clocked at 18 mph (29 km/h) over short distances. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and is often regarded as the most ferocious animal in Africa. There are an estimated 125,000 to 150,000 hippos throughout Sub-Saharan Africa; Zambia (40,000) and Tanzania (20,000-30,000) possess the largest populations. They are still threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth.

Faberge Trinket Jewelry Box. This jewelry box has blue translucent enamel under the crystal ornamentations in the form of crosses. Faberge?s superb enameling technique is regarded as one of his main contributions to art at the end of the last century. These wave (moire) designs are a common type of guilloche work on enameled articles by Faberge. The inside of the box is covered with blue enamel. Material: Pewter, Crystals, Enamel. Dimensions: 3.75in (L) X 2.25in (W) 1.5in (H) The famed Faberge eggs are jeweled eggs, often with the most ornate, minuscule designs on them. The House of Faberge made the original pieces from 1885 to 1917. At that time, they became popular gifts given during the Easter season. Larger versions were made for the Russian royal family, including Alexander III and Nicolas II. Of these, 42 of the 50 originals exist today. Most Faberge eggs, though, were much smaller and hung from a chain around the neck. These eggs have precious metals on them or gemstone decorations, often with intricate detailing. These are a symbol of luxury and thought of as individual masterpieces.

Generally gun-dogs are divided into three major classifications: retrievers, flushing spaniels, and pointing breeds. Retrievers were bred primarily to retrieve birds or other prey and return them to the hunter without damage. Although spaniels and some pointing breeds routinely retrieve game, and many retrievers are skilled in finding game, retrievers are distinguished in that non-slip retrieval is their primary function. As a result, retriever breeds are bred for soft mouths and a great willingness to please, learn, and obey. A soft mouth refers to the willingness of the dog to carry game in its mouth without biting into it. "Hard mouth" is a serious fault in a hunting dog and is one that is very difficult to correct. Newfoundlands are very nice retrievers although the name doesn't say they are soft mouthed-willing to retrieve dogs. Many retriever dogs are willing to please and are very loyal and good tempered like the labrador retriever, golden retriever and newfoundland.
