Robert Indiana Art Print Self Portrait 69 Skid Row
Start Price: 100.00Estimate: 220.00 - 340.00
This self portrait contains the great, bolg geometric shapes the artist is known for. * * Artist: Robert Indiana Title: Self Portrait 69 Skid RowMedium: Lithograph on paperSheet size: 10 1/2 x 14 1/8 inchesCondition: ExcellentBiography: * Robert Indiana (1928- ) was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, and he later took the "nom de brush" of his home state. He studied at art schools in Indianapolis and Utica, the Chicago School of the Art Institute and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine. In 1953 and 1954 he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and London University, afterwards settling in New York, hanging out with art stars Ellsworth Kelly and Jack Youngerman. * Indiana's 1973 "Love" stamp was probably the most widely distributed Pop image ever (300 million were issued - the artist was paid $1,000 for his work), but his subject matter is drawn from decidedly UN-Pop American literature and poetry. Best known for sign-like paintings and sculpture, Indiana has also done figurative painting, written poetry, produced opera and collaborated on the film "EAT" with Andy Warhol. * His work is held in every major collection of contemporary art, including: Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, The Netherlands; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; Detroit Institute of Art, Michigan; Allentown Museum of Art, Pennsylvania; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Brandeis Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts; Albright-Knox Gallery of Art, Buffalo, New York; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, Delaware; Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, Germany; Los Angeles County Museum, California; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California. * "(Indiana) has influenced a younger generation of ''word'' artists like Jenny Holzer, Christopher Wool and Barbara Kruger, and at its best it has a jumpy vitality that registers the beat of American life," wrote Grace Glueck in her 1999 review of the artist's retrospective at the Portland Museum of Art, ''Love and the American Dream: The Art of Robert Indiana.'' And the beat goes on - this image has lots of staying power and freshness and may be the perfect addition to your collection of 20th century prints. *

Original SpongeBob Animation Cel & Background Thinking
Start Price: 35.00Estimate: 70.00 - 110.00
This original hand-painted cel with reproduction background is from the Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob Squarepants. The story takes place under the deep blue sea in Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob resides. SpongeBob, who is a yellow, porous sponge, is your typical happy-go-lucky character, as he is always cheerful and enjoys making people laugh. Patrick Star, SpongeBob's neighbor who is a starfish, boasts knowing nothing and is often getting himself into ridiculous situations. Between the homes of these two lies the home of the miserable Squidward, a squid, who is known for being grouchy and playing tricks on SpongeBob and Patrick. Both SpongeBob and Squidward work at the Krusty Krab, a fast food business run by the greedy money-loving Mr. Krabs, a crab, the arch rival of the evil, possibly misunderstood, Plankton. Another neighbor, Sandy Cheeks, an athletic squirrel who normally wears an astronaut's space suit, was introduced in "Tea at the Treedome." She spends most of her time inventing and experimenting. SpongeBob has sat down on the grass to do some thinking, and it looks like he's about to come up with something! * * Overall Size of Background: 11" x 17" Overall size of cel: 10 1/2" x 12 1/2"Very good conditionOriginal Production Backgrounds are used in the making of the final version of animated productions. The background establishes the location and the overall good mood of the scene. Typically, a background layout artist creates a drawing to establish the content of the scene, placement of characters, perspective and camera angle. Based on this drawing, the background artist creates a preliminary painting to confirm all of the scenes details, then the final production background which is used in the filming of the scene. When these backgrounds are individually photographed behind the progression of production cels, and projected at a rapid succession, the images in the foreground appear to move, creating an animated scene. * This cel was placed with this background because it appears to go well with it. The bottom of the sheet has peg holes, and the animator's notations. *

1890 8 Ft Stone Litho Original Cheret Elysee Montmartre
Start Price: 3,200.00Estimate: 35,000.00 - 50,000.00
This is an original rare Cheret lithograph from 1890. It is huge in scale. Cheret designed the print to promote a theatrical venue for the Elysee Montmartre, one of the most elegant dance halls that Parisians frequented in the late 1800s. In his classic gorgeous color, the artist has portrayed a free-spirited young woman and a happy clown. One of Cheret's assets as an artist was the way his gestural drawings gave his figures motion; there is a swing and a rhythm in his characters that sweeps us right along with them. They seem to live in the moment, carefree and bound for pleasure alone. The winning bidder will enjoy this symphony of color brilliantly orchestrated by Cheret! * * * * In the late 1800s, large-scale lithographic posters had to be printed on separate pieces of paper if the image size exceeded the press size. This image is composed of two sheets. The framers have aligned them with precision. Also, the poster has been backed with linen canvas. There is a slight vertical fold (see picture) * * * . * Artist: Jules Cheret * Title: "Elysee Montmartre" * Medium: Color Lithograph * Date: 1890 * Image size: 31 ¾ by 96 inches * Frame size: 41 ¼ by 101 ¼ inches * Condition of the image: Very good for a poster of this age and size. * Condition of the frame: Excellent * Certificate of Authenticity issued by Midwest Estate Buyers * * * Jules Cheret, 1836-1932, was born in Paris to a poor but creative family of artisans. At age thirteen, he began a three-year apprenticeship with a lithographer. After extensive training, he began creating vivid advertisement posters for cabarets, music halls, and theaters such as the Moulin Rouge. He first saw enormous lithograph posters at a World's Fair during the 1850s, and immediately recognized their artistic potential. * * * * French culture promoted poster art. Rapidly growing cities, expanded commerce and industry created new wealth among a large number of people. Cheret, the "father of the poster," elevated the medium of lithography, traditionally used primarily for the creation of books, to an artform. Cheret designed over 1000 posters, and contributed greatly to the "explosion of advertising." Cheret's skill with the medium influenced the styles of many artists, including Toulouse Lautrec. * * * * This rare poster is not a reproduction of a drawing or painting that already existed; this is a truly original creation by Cheret. It is a much-sought after work of art, and would highlight any collection.

When these backgrounds are individually photographed behind the progression of production cels, and projected at a rapid succession, the images in the foreground appear to move, creating an animated scene. * This cel was placed with this background because it appears to go well with it. The bottom of the sheet has peg holes, and the animator's notations. *

Having achieved a commanding position as a painter in the tumultuous New York art scene of the late 1950s, Johns began to work in lithography at Tatyana Grosman's Universal Limited Art Editions in 1960. The resulting prints demonstrated for the first time in this medium the vitality of the new American art. For Johns, printmaking has continued to be an important part of his total creative output-as it was for such other major modern artists as Munch and Picasso. There is little question that he has contributed more, qualitatively, than any living artist to the printed form of art. * Castelman, "Jasper Johns: A Print Retrospective," The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1986. *

NU ASSIS I Sensual Nude Mikio Watanabe Art Mezzotint
Start Price: 175.00Estimate: 700.00 - 750.00
"Like a tree or a stone, human beings also possess this original purity. I would like to return to that point of simplicity and have the vision to look at all human and living beings," states well-known artist Mikio Watanabe. The strong desire to develop that vision is one of the reasons why we find Watanabe's mezzotints of the nude female form so compelling: Title: "Nu Assis I" ("Seated Nude I") 1997 Mezzotint on BFK Rives Numbered from a limited edition of 75, plus XXX Roman Signed in pencil in the margin LR Sheet: 13 × 20 Image: 5½ × 9 Very good - excellent condition; never mounted, matted or framed Certificate of Authenticity Watanabe creates a mezzotint by repeatedly pressing a curved, serrated mezzotint rocker over the surface of a copper plate until has received many thousands of tiny indentations from this tool. This procedure is extremely time-consuming - most of the plates take 70 - 80 hours to produce - but plates made this way yield velvety blacks that can be obtained no other way. After the entire surface of the plate has been roughened, scraper and burnishers are used to raise tones of gray and white. * "During the slow process of engraving, as I scrape the burrs that I have incised on the copper plate and then polish it, the sensitivity which lies inside me can be revealed. Giving shape and light to what was before absolute darkness, I try to feel this universe of purity which exists deep inside the human body," says the artist. * Mikio Watanabe (Japan, b. 1954) completed his studies in Tokyo in 1977 and settled in Paris, where he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier 17. Since 1981, Mikio Watanabe has focused on mezzotint and his works can be found in many public collections including Bibliotheque National in Paris, the Central Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Ira Moskowitz Signed Judaic Art Print Song of Songs XI
Start Price: 100.00Estimate: 200.00 - 310.00
Artist: Ira Moskowitz Signature: Signed by the artist in pencil, lower rightTitle: Song of Songs XIMedium: Lithograph on paperEdition: Limited, numbered out of 100Size: 30" x 21" Condition: ExcellentBiography: * Ira Moskowitz, (1912 - 2001) descendant of a long rabbinical line, was born in Poland and went with his family to Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1914. The family remained there until 1927, and young Moskowitz received his first education in Prague's schools. Soon after, his family moved to New York City, and in 1927 Moskowitz became the pupil of Henry Wickey at the Art Students League, having finally resolved his conflict between a passion for drawing and a desire to follow the rabbinical profession of his forefathers. Between 1935 and 1938, he traveled to Israel and to Europe where he studied the works of the old masters, an interest derived from his first teacher and one that eventually led to his active collaboration in 1954 on the four-volume series, "Great Drawings of All Time." * In 1939, Moskowitz made his first trip to Mexico, and stayed for six months. In 1943 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and moved to New Mexico, where he remained for seven years drawing the Indians and becoming an active member of the Taos-Sante Fe artists group. His book, "Patterns and Ceremonials of the Indians of the Southwest," appeared in 1949. Since 1962, Moskowitz has divided his time between Paris and New York. He is a superb draughtsman in the old tradition, drawing with a quick, nervous, but incisive line that is extremely lively and full of movement. His subject matter takes its shape from the life that he sees around him-natural forms, the human figure, landscapes, and people at their daily tasks. *

Gobelin Huge Antique Tapestry Middle East Biblical Art
Start Price: 135.00Estimate: 600.00 - 920.00
This large tapestry is called a Gobelin. The name is derived from the Gobelin family of France, who were noted fabric dyers from the 14th century. We don't know the age or origin of this piece, but it may date back over one hundred years. The scene depicts a Middle Eastern city, probably from Biblical times, where a figure on the ground, surrounded by jugs, talks to another figure on horseback. A temple is seen in the background. The Gobelin is mounted on a wooden frame, and measures 50 x 70 inches. Its condition is good, aside from staining that has apparently dripped down from the top. The stain marks actually blend in fairly well into the imagery, appearing like rain. * This is a fine Gobelin tapestry that will surely transform any room.
