ILKHAN: Abu Sa'id, 1316-1335, AV dinar (4.95g), NM, ND, A-2212, type G, lovely strike, choice About Uncirculated, R. The mint name and date are completely blundered, as this is a contemporary Anatolian imitation, probably struck circa 730-740 (type G was struck 729-734). This type comes from a small hoard, perhaps a total of 15 to 20 pieces, and has been incorrectly marketed as Baybirt mint dated 733. Both the mint name and date on this type are totally illegible, typical of the central and eastern Anatolian issues.

The date is likely 708, with thaman for "8" very clear, unless that tiny added text between 8 and 700 is supposed to represent 'asahr for 10, in which case the date should be 718, the last year of Muhammad's reign. Neither 708 or 718 has previously been reported.

Start Price: 95.00Estimate: 120.00 - 160.00
TIMURID: Sultan Husayn, 1469-1506, AR 2 miri (1.49g), Astarabad, ND? A-A2437, unusually nice strike for this extremely rare denomination, strong Very Fine, RR. Presumably struck late in the reign, during the financial crisis which erupted after 906/1500. The term miri is a shortened form of amiri, i.e., "of the amir". Two miri would be 2/3 of a reduced tanka of about 2.38g (type #2436), which is known from dated examples 906-910. If one turns the reverse 1/4 to the left, then there is a symbol at the left that closely resembles the number 9, a large pellet to the right, as usual for zero, and another 9-like symbol at the bottom. Could this be a secretive 909, which would be a correct date for this type?

QAJAR: Fath 'Ali Shah, 1797-1834, AV toman (6.14g), Dar al-'Ibada Yazd, AH1213//1214
Start Price: 750.00High Bid: 800.00Estimate: 800.00 - 1,000.00
QAJAR: Fath 'Ali Shah, 1797-1834, AV toman (6.14g), Dar al-'Ibada Yazd, AH1213//1214, A-2859, type S1, nice strike, reverse in ornate lobated square within circle of pearls, Extremely Fine, R. Type S1 was frequently dated on both sides, and mismatched dates are not uncommon. The mintmasters were loath to discard a still functional die, and there was no legal reason for alterating the date, though recut dates are also found, on many gold and some silver pieces of Fath 'Ali Shah.AH1213-1214 corresponds to June 1798 to May 1800, just when date-recutting reached its zenith in the United States.

QAJAR: Fath 'Ali Shah, 1797-1834, AV toman (5.76g), Dar al-Saltana Tehran, AH"122"
Start Price: 900.00High Bid: 1,100.00Estimate: 1,100.00 - 1,300.00
QAJAR: Fath 'Ali Shah, 1797-1834, AV toman (5.76g), Dar al-Saltana Tehran, AH"122", A-2863, type T1, excellent strike, minor die break near the date on the reverse, Extremely Fine, RRR. The obverse is somewhat similar to type S1, naskhi calligraphy and horizontal line across, whereas type S2 employed the nasta'liq calligraphy, as on the silver type B (this style is unknown for silver). The date "122" could be either 1220 or 1221, but 1221 is more likely, as the engraver might have confused the first letter alif of al-sultan with a number "1", and engraved only "122" on both the obverse and reverse dies.Until recently, only one example of type T1 was known, also Tehran and described as AH1221, but without description (Tübingen collection). Recently, a few examples of this type struck at Shiraz and just this one of Tehran were discovered. It is possible that a few more specimens exist, without legible dates, and misdescribed as type S1.
