ZIYADID: al-Muzaffar b. 'Ali, 983-1044, AV dinar (4.35g), Madinat 'Adan, AH[3]76, A-1071, very clear mint, although the D of madina is retrograde, reading of the abbreviated date is likely, small cross in obverse center, Extremely Fine, RRR. This remarkable dinar is clearly based on an unreported issue of the Ziyadad al-Muzaffar b. 'Ali struck at 'Adan, but because of the numerous misspelling and epigraphic errors, is almost certainly an East African imitation of a Ziyadid dinar of 'Adan, likely produced along what is today the Tanzanian coast or the northern coast of Madagascar. The style is clearly derived from the ordinary dinars of the Fatimid caliph al-'Aziz, who ruled AH365-386, thus contemporary with the Ziyadid al-Muzaffar.

The following description appeared in the Peus sale: Only two types of gold dinars of Chingiz Khan are known on which his name can be read. The first from the mint of Ghazna and dated 618 H was found in about 100 specimen in an Afghan hoard of 1996, the second from Bukhara was represented in an Iranian hoard around 1970 with about five coins of the present type. It is now believed that the 1996 hoard contained 150-200 specimens of the Ghazna 618 type, all from the same pair of dies. Steve Album purchased a Bukhara example at the Los Angeles coin fair early 1970s, probably for about $50, which was likely not far below its retail value at the time. A third dinar type with his name has subsequently been discovered (the previous lot of Balkh mint).

GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AV dinar (5.36g) (Ghazna), AH618
Start Price: 1,600.00High Bid: 3,800.00Estimate: 2,000.00 - 2,400.00
GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AV dinar (5.36g) (Ghazna), AH618, A-1964, double-struck, Very Fine, R. This remarkable specimen was struck once, then flipped over and restruck. The name Chingiz Khan is thus visible on both sides, chingiz kh(an) on the later strike, ching…. on the initial strike! The date is very clear on the later strike. The mint must be Ghazna, as both strikes are from the standard Ghazna 618 dies.

Start Price: 1,200.00High Bid: 2,900.00Estimate: 1,500.00 - 2,000.00
GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AV dinar (2.89g), Barchin, ND, A-1965, Barchin (or Barjin) was located in the westernmost region of Central Asia, and was also briefly a mint for the Golden Horde in AH753 (copper pul only, cf. Zeno-36195), the city was mentioned by Plano Carpini in his 13th century work, Ystoria Mongolorum, written after his journey from Italy to Mongolia, Very Fine, RRR, ex. Tony Ettinger collection. Inscribed al-khaqan al-a'zam in the obverse field, with darb below and the mint name above; the mint name is also in the obverse marginal inscription. If there is a date, it is off flan on this specimen, probably the only one thus far reported. The reverse bears the kalima, with the caliph's name (al-Nasir) below. Probably unique.

Judging by style and calligraphy, I would strongly consider this type to have been struck during Chingiz Khan's lifetime, probably during or very shortly after 1220. The Mongol conquest of the region took place circa 1219-1222.

GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AV dinar (2.77g), NM, ND

GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AV dinar (2.77g), NM, ND, A-C1967var, blundered imitation of a Fatimid dinar of the caliph al-Amir, but unfortunately, a large piece is broken off, Very Fine to Extremely Fine, RRR, ex. Tony Ettinger collection.
This gold coin was found in a Central Asian hoard group of perhaps 25 or 30 gold coins of various Great Mongol types, many of which are in this auction. The group appeared in the market in the late 1990s, from a source in Hong Kong, who said the hoard came from Xinjiang province of China. This example closely resembles a Crusader copy of a Fatimid dinar of al-Amir. One side bears the text ‘al ghaya, “extremely pure”, appropriate for the original Fatimid dinars, but not for the Crusader and Mongol imitations. The same design, also with ‘al ghaya, appears on Chaghatayid silver dirhams of Almaligh (in what is now northwestern Xinjiang) dated AH639 (Zeno-77447). The color of the gold is lighter than the Crusader issues, presumably due to a different alloy or fineness.

GOLDEN HORDE: Anonymous, 1260s-1280s, AR dirham (0.99g), NM, ND, A-C2020, Singatullina—, completely sylized Arabic inscription on obverse, undetermined design on reverse, bold strike, Extremely Fine, RRR, ex. Tony Ettinger collection.
The reverse design seems perchance derived from the bull obverse of a typical bull-and-horseman jital from northern India, including several types struck by the Khwarizmshah 'Ala al-Dawla Muhammad. Although the bull-and-horsemen jitals were struck in what is now eastern Afghanistan and points further to the east, since Muhammad's territory included Khwarizm and Bukhara, it would not be surprising if a few jitals were carried further to the northwest, perhaps by traders who left the regions where the jitals were valid and traveled into the Golden Horde lands, which also included Khwarizm at the time these imitative silver coins were struck.

As for so much of the Golden Horde coinage, the overall appearance was much more important than the accuracy of the text, so that the average person—most were illiterate—would comfortably accept the coin as authentic.

The mint name means "the New Gulistan", probably a reference to a newly established mint within the same city, less likely an administrative center either within the city or closeby. GOLDEN HORDE: "Jani Beg, deceased", ca. 1366-1367, AR dirham (1.58g), ND
Start Price: 200.00High Bid: 400.00Estimate: 250.00 - 300.00
GOLDEN HORDE: "Jani Beg, deceased", ca. 1366-1367, AR dirham (1.58g), ND, A-2045S, BMC-424, obverse legend arranged in four boxes, with a central ornament, kalima on reverse in elegant calligraphy, choice Very Fine, RR, ex. Tony Ettinger collection. Although this type clearly cites the long deceased Jani Beg (d. AH758), the term marhum ("deceased") is not included. That word appears on another type of "Jani Beg" dated 767 (BMC-423), thus clearly confirming that the indicated "ruler" was not a Jani Beg II, as was once assumed.

GOLDEN HORDE: Muhammad Bulaq Khan, 1369-1380, AR dirham (1.42g), al-Urdu, AH7(7)5
Start Price: 60.00High Bid: 130.00Estimate: 80.00 - 100.00

The overall calligraphy is inferior to normal issues of 775, and I suspect that this is either a contemporary imitation or a regular issue struck from dies engraved by an inexperienced die-cutter.

Start Price: 60.00High Bid: 65.00Estimate: 80.00 - 100.00
GOLDEN HORDE: Toqtamish, 1376-1395, AE pul (2.41g), NM, ND, A-2050.1, Very Fine, S, ex. Tony Ettinger collection. Published by Klokov & Lebedev, in DPDR, vol. 4, p. 116, type #137. They could offer no clear interpretation of this issue, which has elsewhere been assigned to Toqtamish. The mint name and style are similar to other puls where the inscription can clearly be read for the mint Saray.

GOLDEN HORDE: Timur Qutlugh, 1395-1401, AR dirham (0.96g), Uluq Jadida, AH(800)
Start Price: 200.00High Bid: 360.00Estimate: 250.00 - 300.00
GOLDEN HORDE: Timur Qutlugh, 1395-1401, AR dirham (0.96g), Uluq Jadida, AH(800), A-2052, decent strike for this type, cf. Zeno-69268 for a similar example, but different dies, lovely Very Fine, RR, ex. Tony Ettinger collection. Uluq, also written as Ulus or Ulugh, as on the silver coins attributed to the Great Mongol Töregene (A-1976), but is very likely an alternative for Urdu ("the camp").

GOLDEN HORDE: Shadi Beg, 1401-1407, AR dirham (1.08g), Urdu Mu'azzam, AH(8)03
Start Price: 160.00High Bid: 270.00Estimate: 200.00 - 250.00
GOLDEN HORDE: Shadi Beg, 1401-1407, AR dirham (1.08g), Urdu Mu'azzam, AH(8)03, A-2053, date largely off flan but sufficiently legible, usual weakness, Very Fine, RRR, ex. Tony Ettinger collection. Zeno lists no coins of Shadi Beg of the mint of Urdu Mu'azzam, which is boldly clear on this specimen. The issues of Shadi Beg of Urdu (without mu'azzam) all bear the kalima on the reverse, where this piece has only the mint & date on the reverse and lacks the kalima altogether. The obverse is calligraphically so similar to Zeno-92175 that it can only be an issue of Shadi Beg. Roman Reza has recently confirmed to me that dirhams of Shadi Beg with the mint name Urdu Mu'azzam are indeed known.

GOLDEN HORDE: Pulad Khan, 1407-1413, AR dirham (0.70g), Rajan, ND, A-2055B, very rare mint, Very Fine, R, ex. Tony Ettinger collection. Rajan (Râjân, with two long alifs) was located within the Bulghar region of the Middle Volga area, but has not been specifically pinpointed. This specimen is very similar to Zeno-25824, but from different dies, with a similar ornamental knot below the last two letters of the mint name.

Unlike silver coins, copper coins were very rarely hoarded and are normally found as single specimens or in very small groups of no more than 5 or 6 pieces.

CHAPANID: Malik Ashraf, 1344-1356/57, AR dinar (2.12g), Kashan, ND
Start Price: 290.00High Bid: 950.00Estimate: 450.00 - 550.00
CHAPANID: Malik Ashraf, 1344-1356/57, AR dinar (2.12g), Kashan, ND, A-2274M, about 35% flat strike on obverse, less so on reverse, but the name shah malik ashraf is fully clear, as is the mint name, Very Fine, RRR.
Although Malik Ashraf was actually in charge of the Tabrizi region of the former Ilkhan kingdom, all coins, with the exception of this type, were struck in the name of the second-from-last Ilkhan ruler, Anushirawan, a mere figurehead in a kingdom actually controled by Malik Ashraf. The only explanation for this coin in his name is that the authorities at Kashan chose to recognize Malik Ashraf formally, perhaps a declaration of independence between Anushirawan and the Injuyid opponent, Abu Ishaq, who struck coins at Kashan AH747-756, with a break in the early 750s. This issue is undated, but may have been struck in the early 750s.
This is the second reported specimen, the first in the official collection at the University of Tübingen, Germany.
