Thumbnail 1 John André ALS Start Price: 1,000.00High Bid: 3,250.00 Autograph letter signed by British spymaster John André to his mother, Mary Louisa Giradot, of his recent promotion to Adjutant-General of the British Army in North America, serving under Commander-in-Chief Sir Henry Clinton. Written from the New York Headquarters and dated 1 September 1780, 5pp. letter reads in large part, ''Dear Madam, Good fortune still follows me, the Commander in Chief has raised me to the first office in the Army, if that of most confidence and least proffit is to be stiled so. I am Adjutant General. The Rank of Lieutenant Colonel which usually attends this post is not given me on account of the difficulties made at giving me rank of Major, but I may nourish hope of obtaining it hereafter. I…can hardly look back at the steep progress I have made without being giddy. The having exercised the duties I am called to, for near a twelvemonth gives me a greater confidence in myself than I should else have and the thought that in acquiring this much Experience I have not been guilty of great Omission, &a. makes me trust in my ability to fill the place with Reputation. – My satisfaction at my Appointment is renew’d at my acquainting you with it, as I am persuaded I am giving equal pleasure to what I have experienc’d myself.…the great quantity of Business which assails me sometimes affects my spirits Exercise however infallibly restores me. I do not derive great power from my situation but what openings it gives me to provide for, or oblige (in a good cause) I shall avail myself at your nod. The loss of the Mercury packet taken by the Rebels has I suppose deprived me of accounts from you but I hope for some by the first opportunity…J André''. Pages measure 7.25'' x 8.75''. Thumbnail 2 Force Declaration Start Price: 1,000.00High Bid: 1,000.00 1843 Force Declaration of Independence from the original copper plate by William Stone. Measures approximately 25.5'' x 29'' on rice paper. This offering represents an important opportunity to obtain one of the earliest copies of the Declaration of Independence. In 1823, Congress authorized the production of facsimile copies of the Declaration of Independence for two reasons: the original was deteriorating rapidly and many of the aging original Signers sought copies. John Quincy Adams, then Secretary of State, oversaw the project and commissioned noted engraver William J. Stone to reproduce the document. Stone used a new Wet-Ink transfer process to create a copper plate from which facsimile copies were made. By wetting the original document, some of the original ink was transferred to the copperplate, which was then used for printing. Stone printed 201 copies on vellum, keeping one copy for himself (now residing in the Smithsonian) and distributing other copies to Thomas Jefferson, President James Monroe, members of Congress, surviving original Signers, various colleges and universities, and others. Of the original 201 copies, only 31 examples are currently known to exist, 19 of which are permanently housed in museums. The remaining dozen vellum examples are rarely offered for sale and today typically bring $200,000 or so. In 1843, Peter Force used the original Stone copperplate to print additional copies of the Declaration of Independence on rice paper for inclusion in Volume I of his multi-volume book, ''American Archives.'' Congress authorized up to 1,500 copies of the book to be printed, and while the actual number of copies printed is unknown, it's generally estimated at 500. It is estimated that fewer than half of the rice paper copies still exist (of which this is an example) in varying states of preservation. The Stone and Force copies represent an irony: certainly, they allowed additional people and institutions to obtain an identical facsimile of this most beloved of all historic American documents, but Stone's Wet-Ink transfer process contributed to the deterioration of the original signed copy of the Declaration. The parchment did not respond well to water, with the unfortunate result being that the original Declaration of Independence, on display in our Nation's capitol, is in a rather sad state of preservation. This Declaration has been folded for its original purpose of inclusion in Force's book and is in overall near fine condition with a slightly uneven right edge and archival tape restoration to verso, invisible from the front and nearly so when viewed from the back. A visually stunning example of one of America's most beloved documents.

Thumbnail 14 George Washington ALS Start Price: 1,000.00 Autograph letter signed G. Washington as President, one page, 4.5 x 7.5. [Mount Vernon, Virginia], 18 July 1796. To the Secretary of War James McHenry and marked Private by the President. Integral leaf addressed by Washington to James McHenry Esq. Docketed by McHenry 18 July 1796 / from Washington. In very good to near fine condition with writing dark and clear. Framed with an engraving of Washington to an overall size of 21'' x 28.5''; document has been adhered in several places, but not mounted, to matting of frame. In full, I have not segacity [sic] enough to discover what end was to be answered by reporting: first, that I was to be in Philadelphia on the 4th, July, and secondly, when that report was contradicted by my non-appearance, then to account for it by a fall from my Phaeton. If any scheme could have Originated, or been facilitated by these, or any other reports, however unfounded, I should not have been surprised at the propagation of them; for evidence enough has been given that truth or falsehood is equally used, and indifferent to that class of men if their object can be obtained. I wish you well, and am always your Affectionate G. Washington. Secretary of War McHenry knew that President Washington was not going to be in Philadelphia on 4 July 1796, to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Independence. McHenry, from Philadelphia, wrote letters to the President on July 2nd (with enclosures) and July 3rd each was acknowledged by Washington in a letter to McHenry on July 8th. The Secretary of War would not have sent these letters to Mount Vernon if he knew the President would soon be arriving in the nations capital. Judge Alexander Addison wrote to President Washington from Philadelphia on July 4th. He had heard that Washington would be in Philadelphia, beginning his letter: Supposing that you would be in Philadelphia when I should arrive here Believing that the President still might be traveling to Philadelphia, Judge Addison concludes his letter, If there is no certainty of your being here before the end of next week, I hope you will take the trouble of giving me the desired information by letter directed to me at Col. Gurneys Philadelphia. President Washington answered Judge Addisons letter on 8 July 1796, giving him the information requested, with no mention of his supposed trip to Philadelphia. In this revealing letter, Washington cannot understand the reasoning behind a report, presumably propagated by McHenry, that he would be in Philadelphia on July 4th nor his absence attributed to a supposed fall from his Phaeton, his four wheel carriage. The President is not surprised, however, because he knows that there are men who would tell the truth or lie, depending upon the situation, to reach their desired object. George Washington died on 14 December 1799. A few months later, a parson named Mason Locke Weems published A History of the Life and Death, Virtues and Exploits, of General George Washington. Weems invented a tale of how a young George Washington received a new hatchet and used it to chop down his fathers prized cherry tree. Faced with telling the truth or lying, when his father asked him how the tree had fallen, George bravely cried out, I cannot tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet. In this magnificent letter, George Washington, in the last year of his presidency, centered around the Fourth of July, reacts to a lie about him and a second lie to cover up the first, evoking the most famous example of his fortitude of character, albeit a fictional tale, when he could not tell a lie. When John C. Fitzpatrick was editing The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources 1745-1799 for publication (1931-1944), he could not locate this letter. However, he found a copy in the McHenry Photostats in the Library of Congress and the text of this letter was published in Volume 35.

Now the south are avenged…Once Abbott realized what had happened, he ran down a flight of stairs round to the President's box. There upon the floor, his head tenderly supported in the lap of…Laura Keene…lay the prostrate, unconscious form of President Lincoln. What, in my opinion, is wrong with this story is that...despite the greatness of Pete as a stellar athlete hero...the negative image of him flubbing and unable to catch any ball at all will make him schnook. This is not entirely apparent in the text, but when you picture these negative scenes in illustrations, you will find that negatives are always more memorable than positives. And I think the reader's reaction will be, 'What's the matter with this dope?' I may be wrong of course...so why not send it to Harper and Row who do very good brat books and several times have made best sellers out of properties that I've rejected. '' A miraculous find in excellent condition. Never before seen on the market.

When the 14 year patent term expired, this document was no longer valid, and so returned to Edison's laboratory office in Menlo Park, New Jersey. This piece is displayed in a custom archival frame along with photographs of Edison, a detailed plaque, a printed schematic diagram of his light bulb, and an original 1800’s magazine advertisement for his new invention. A time will come, when they will be very valuable and it is a great pity to give any of them away, they are only neglected…'' In 1881, Gordon published a report, currently housed in the British Museum, entitled ''Gigantic Land Tortoises of Seychelles,'' crediting the information to ''a very intelligent gentleman Mr. Charles Button of Providence Mahé.'' In another undated two page letter, Gordon asks Button to ''tell me about the Coco de Mers, for I am much interested – do you think they will die out. Have you got a serpent for me. If so cork the bottle well…'' The Coco de Mer is a palm tree native to the Seychelles which Gordon deemed to be the Tree of Knowledge; today, a forest of 4,000 Coco de Mer trees are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I may send for them at some future time…'' (12) ''The vessel for Zanzibar which I had hoped to catch has not been able to await the coming in of mail, so that I may after all, have to come by the April mail…'' (13) ''I cannot come through Seychelles, so kindly see the things packed safely and ready to go to Adm. by the April mail…'' (14) ''You will be sick of my notes, but this will be the last…the address Col. Gordon care of Agent British India…Co. Adm…'' (15) From Cape Town, 17 June 1882: ''Let me know how you go on at Seychelles in which place I take a great interest. Better address me General Gordon RE 5 Rochester Place Southampton for there is no direct route to Cape from Seychelles…This Colony is a smart one &; there is plenty of vigour in it…'' (16) ''I am now on my way home and shall be better able to write to you than when at the Cape where the communications took such time…tell me about the Coco de Mer and anything you can think of in the way of curious things…How is the Coco de Mer in the Govt Garden at Mahé and how are the Tortoises. I hope that they are looked after. Remember you are to keep the little ones for me of the Brood which came out last October. I wish I could come and settle out at Seychelles but it is too far off and I am thinking of settling down in Palestine…'' (17) From Southampton, 25 November 1882: ''Here is a letter from Mr. Dyer who evidently considers you to be what I know you are a most valuable botanical ally…'' Drawing two clusters of buds, Gordon tells Button to ''put some of these up for me but do not send them till I write for fear they should be stolen.
