What an amazing find!

An Elkington Tea & Coffee Set with tray, tilting kettle on stand (rare to find this item!) w/ burner, sugar and creamer.

All oval can shaped pieces are in immaculate condition with hand-engraved details. The coffee pot base has a small dent. The kettle spacers are in excellent condition as are the knobs on the kettles and sugar. All are monogrammed with the letter "W".

The coffee, tea, creamer and sugar are all marked with the Elkington date stamp of "O" which means it was made in 1875. The tilting kettle has the date stamp "P" which means it was made in 1876. That makes these pieces 132 years old! The tray has no markings but is of the same character, quality and style as the rest of the set. There is also a marking (pattern number perhaps) of 8023.

Elkington & Company is credited with being the inventors of the silverplate/electroplate process. They had their process patented in 1830's. They granted special licenses to other companies like the French company Christolfe. In more modern times, Elkington supplied the flatware to luxury sections of the Titanic and other ships.

THE FIRM MAISON KRIEGER WERE FURNITURE MANUFACTURERS, EST. 1826. THEY PRODUCED AND EXHIBITED PIECES IN EXHIBITIONS, SUCH AS THE 1900 EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE. The porcelain being offered here is fully decorated in matte finish (hand painted in color but not glazed). It is 21 cm (H) X 41 cm (L) and sits on a carved walnut base 48 cm long. This is the 37th porcelain from a proposed limited edition of 350. However, after 175 units were sold at $2,100 the edition was retired in the late 1960's.

The Krause Publication surveys the secondary market in figurines. In 1985 Krause valued First Lesson at $3,550 and confirmed the edition size at 175. To my knowledge this figurine (#37) is the initial public offering of First Lesson in the secondary market by a U.S. porcelain dealer. In 2001 an artist proof of First Lesson was offered in a private international sale from Germany for $13,500 (documentation available).

You can own 'First Lesson', in mint condition and with the manufacturer's original custom made shipping/storage container.

Lalique designed this plate so that the birds are incised into the crystal (not printed as color transfers or hand-painted on the surface). The plates in this series were never numbered, nor were certificates of authenticity ever issued. The date 1965 and the name "Lalique-France" are the only engraved identification marks on the crystal. The original Lalique sticker is still on the outer rim of the plate (see photo)

"It is generally acknowledged within the industry that this plate started the so-called modern era of limited edition plate collecting", as stated by Vivienne Saidel formerly the Administrative Co-Ordinator of Plate World.

Until 1965 the major companies that designed and manufactured plates (like Bing & Grondahl and Royal Copenhagen) produced their series only in porcelain, only with color transfers, only in blue and white and never in limited editions.

Aside from being an Object d'art Deux Oiseaux is unique because it was the first non-Scandinavian plate, the first non-blue and white plate, and the first non-porcelain plate EVER SOLD in a strictly limited edition series.

In 1983 Susan Jones, the renowned Collectible Investment Advisor valued Deux Oiseaux at $1600. In 1984 The Plate Collector Publication valued it at $1700.

This particular Pelican is listed as the 203rd issued in a limited edition of 1200. The edition was issued in 1976 at $925 and sold out in 1983 (the year Tay died) at $1800. Brown Pelican is handpainted in Matte finish (colored but not glazed) and stands 12" high x 6.5" wide x 8" deep. G. Tagliariol's signature is inscribed on the base below the pelican. His name is also under the base, as is the name of the Sculpture, its (issue) number 203, and the Kaiser logo.

In the 22 plus years since it was sold out Tay's Brown Pelican has not been seen on the secondary market. This is a first. This purchase is a no brainer because after this sale you probably won't see Brown Pelican on the market again for another 20 years.

You won't find this rare couple being offered in any other secondary market. After this sale it may be another 30 years before they surface again. It's been 3 decades since they were originally issued. I doubt if half of the complete edition still exists in a collectible condition and surely none but this pair are currently available.

The Dove Group was designed with a glaze finish by Lladro's acclaimed sculptor Salvador Debon. It stands tall at 21 inches (almost 2 feet) and is 13 inches wide. Dove was issued in 1977 at $475 and permanently retired in 1989 at $1350.

The Dove Group rarely if ever appears for resale in the secondary market. Therefore, to determine its current fair market value, I?ve calculated the rate of appreciation it accrued in its first 12 years of sales (1977-1989) which dollar-wise amounted to $875. I then used that same conservative rate (even though today?s inflation rate is much higher) to compute its increased value over the last 19 years, ending in 2008. Thus by precedence, you have here an accurate and valid determination of the Dove?s current market worth, which now stands at $2625.

Further, in order to expedite this sale I am willing to give you Dove at a $500 discount. This determines a sale price of $2125. Also, for the same reason as the discount, I will likewise absorb the cost of Shipping, Handling and Insurance on any purchase made for delivery in the USA before 9/26/08.

Needless to say that ?Dove ? is in pristine condition.
