The present lot provides you an Ancient Hopewell Fox and Snake Effigy Platform Pipe, originating from Southern Ohio in the heart of the Ohio River Valley, and believed to be Middle Woodland Period dating to circa 200 BCE to 500 CE. The effigy pipe carved of rich brown pipestone, showcases well preserved condition and excellent craftsmanship. The piece was acquired from Scott County, Illinois as per the collection/museum tag along the bottom (also marked “45d”). The piece shows an uncommon amount of detail and emotion with the pipe bowl being found at the back of the fox with the animal’s head tucked down and to the right curled in looking down and the approaching snake carving. Provenance: From a French artifact auction, Thion Encheres, in October 7, 2007, and inspected by expert antiquity analyzer; François Bigot. The Effigy Pipe measures 3.75" long 1.5" wide, and 1.75" tall. The piece has been repaired as shown. Our company sold a Woodland Era Hopewell pipe from the same collection on 9/30/2017 for $500.00 showing considerably less detail and a smaller size.
