Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with Casehardened Receiver
This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1893. The rifle has blued barrel, magazine, loading gate and bolt; the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The rifle has a round barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed Winchester Express front sight with white bead and there is a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail. A factory installed folding combination peep rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-", in front of the rear sight dovetail. The caliber, "40-65 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger and the serial number, "85780", is stamped toward the rear of the tang.

Fine. The rifle retains nearly 70% of the original blue and 40% casehardened finish. Finish wear on the barrel is limited to some thinning at the muzzle and on the top of the barrel behind the front sight. The bolt and loading gate have nearly all of the original blue finish. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap and the top and sides of the receiver is slightly faded but the case colors remain visible. The case colors on the underside of the receiver have faded to a sliver gray. The case colors on the hammer, loading lever and lower tang are vivid. The buttplate heel has strong case colors; the balance of the buttplate has faded to a silver patina. The barrel and receiver markings are clear. The stock and forearm are in very good to excellent condition with most of the original varnish finish and only scattered handling marks. This is a solid example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with desirable casehardened receiver.
