Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1882. The rifle as a 28-inch octagon barrel, full-length magazine, crescent buttplate and varnished walnut stock and forearm. The barrel, magazine, forend cap and receiver have blue finish. The loading lever, hammer and buttplate are color casehardened and the loading gate has a niter blue finish. The barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and folding adjustable leaf rear sight. The third model frame has an integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S -REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT -PATENTED-MARCH 29.1865. OCTOBER.16.1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The designation: "CAL. 45-75" is located on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the frame. "45-75" is engraved on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped with the third style designation: "{MODEL. 1876}". The serial number, "40403", is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. The Model 1876 Winchester was the first lever action rifle designed for large caliber cartridges that were suitable for big game. This rifle was enthusiastically endorsed by the most famous of all American sportsmen, Theodore Roosevelt.

Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 40% plus of the original blue finish. The edges of the barrel are sharp and the factory legend and caliber designation are crisp. The receiver has light handling wear with significant amounts of blue in protected areas. Traces of case colors remain on the hammer, and the lever with the refinished crescent buttplate having faded to a silver gray patina. The markings on the barrel, receiver tangs and cartridge elevator are sharp. The stock and forearm are both fine with about half of the original varnish. There are scattered light handling marks on the stock and forearm. This is a solid representative example of a desirable Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle.
