Offered for sale in this lot is an exceptional Western Woodlands Ball Head War Club with outstanding authentic figural tacked design and dating to the circa first to early third quarter of the 19th Century. The circa 1800-1860’s ball head war club tomahawk shows a rich dark patina throughout and is carved of one solid piece of wood being adorned with heavy file branded accents. The head of the war club shows a large round spherical shape carved from a solid piece of burl root wood, giving it an incredible heavy density desired by early warriors for its lethal strength. The club shows all authentic early solid brass trade tacks with a square brass shaft that have an excellent worn mellow patina and are placed in a beautiful geometric pattern showing stripes, circles, and crosses or “x”. The gripping area shows honest wear consistent with much use and age. At the end of the handle shows a carved pierced area which would have held a drop of feathers or beaded drop. The end on the right side is accented by two additional early solid brass trade tacks with one being missing. The piece overall shows a very fine museum quality age as it has been well kept for. The ball war club head shows visible primitive carving and was previously adorned with additional solid brass tacks and a red ocher pigment mineral painted star at the striking area which has over many years and much use worn, with the tacks now missing due to the force of striking a foe. The ball head war club has been called by the previous collector a Phase IV (Phase 4) Ball Head Tacked War Club. Provenance: The piece was purchased many decades ago by noted Texas Native American Indian weapons collector Williamson and has been consigned by his son after his passing. This authentic piece is truly one of the finest ball head tacked war club currently offered for sale and the finest we have offered. The war club measures 6.75" x 21.5". The ball head round area is 4 inches in diameter at the striking area. The piece was said to have been previously valued during the collectors lifetime at over $15,000.
