The only visible marking on the gun is "WELSHHANS" on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight. Consignor notes state that it was manufactured in York County, circa 1777-1787 and the individual was a guard during the Revolutionary War. Brass mountings and mounted with a full straight grip maple stock with brass end cap and buttplate with 3" heel extension. There are 4 "Welshantz" gunsmiths listed in "American Gunsmiths", by Frank Sellers, from York, PA. On page 340 of "Thoughts on The Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age" by Joe King Jr., he states that the Welshanses were "more interested in making barrel blanks and selling them to other gunsmiths than in turning out complete rifles." He further stated that complete rifles made by this maker were plain without relief carving. This rifle fits that description well.

Gauge: 54

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a dark brown patina with some minor pitting on the barrel. The brass components have been polished (except the ramrod pipes) and remain bright for the most part. The ramrod pipes have an aged patina. The stock is good and shows signs of some sanding in areas and a couple professionally repaired cracks on the forend. There is a narrow splinter absent on the right side and some scattered minor dents and dings. The action is fine.
