VVGS-1 WHEELOCKSaxson puffer or Wheelock circa 1550-1580 with nicely flared barrel and finely formed and inlaid stock. Two makers marks at the center portion of well-made and engraved lock. Measures 16” overall with a 7 1/8”heavy barrel showing pronounced flare and approximately .70 caliber smoothbore. The stock is near fine with 95%-98% of its original cow bone inlays that are engraved in classic early motifs. The original ramrod is retained. The belt hook is missing and a small amount of filler is where the base of the hook rested in the stock by rear lock plate screw. The butt cap is an old black hardwood replacement. The interior of lock is complete and well made. A desirable form and size that is rarely encountered. An old Salt Lake collector’s estate who shopped with Theodore Dexter in the 40’s-50’s. 1st time seen on the auction block.
