Photograph 6 ¼’’x 4’’ and 6 ½’’x 4 ¼’’ on white matte. Medium contrast and focus is sharp. Top left corner is slightly worn and sides of the matte have darkening from wear. A small one inch scratch can be seen on t eh bottom left corner of the photograph. The photo shows a railroad track lying in the center of a giant canyon. On the back of the matte it reads “C.R. Savage, Art Bazar. Salt Lake City. Views of the Great West. Gold and Silver Medals Awarded Territorial Fair 1888, 1889, 1890.” The photo was taken and produced by Charles R. Savage. Savage was a native of England who moved to the US and converted to the Mormon faith. He studied photography and made portraits of Mormon immigrants before the move to Utah. He took several photographs of the American west and was the first person to photograph the area today known as Zion National Park. (Mautz, Carl . Biographies of Western Photographers.
