For bidding in this lot is a RARE advertisement for the United States Cartridge Companies, Black Shells. The advertisement depicts a towering black bear, perched on his hind legs, mischievously holding a box of US Cartridge Companies "Black Shells", and standing triumphantly over a hunters rifle, while the hunter quickly scurries up a tree in the background. US Cartridge Company was established in 1869, and was led by the controversial attorney, politician, and Civil War general Benjamin F. Butler. By securing a government contract for munitions, and the ever growing popularity of hunting by the Nations middle class, cemented US Cartridge Company as one of the top competitors amongst Remington and Winchester. The rare advertisement has been seen at auction in the form of a Die-Cut sign fetching $6,000, and as a 1922 calendar for $3,000. The advertisement is believed to originate from the first quarter of the 20th century, and shows good condition overall. The piece is based on thick paper, and is preserved in a protective mylar sleeve. The advertisement does show some creasing in the rear hips of the bear, and on the bottom left paw. The ad measures 16 3/4" tall, and 9 1/8" wide.
