U.S. Simeon North Model 1813 Percussion Conversion Pistol
Manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, circa 1813 to 1815 with total quantity approximately 1,626 (around 1,000 delivered to the U.S. Navy with the remainder delivered to the U.S. Army). This pistol was delivered to the Army, lacking the belt hook installed on the Navy models. The lock is marked "S. NORTH (in downward curve) over an American eagle motif with the letters "U" and "S" at either side over "MIDLn CON. (in upward curve). The breech of the barrel is marked with "P / US" on the left side. The stock is flush with the front barrel band and has an iron tang/buttcap and a lock plate that is beveled at the front and slightly rounded at the rear, with the bolster percussion conversion. There is faint oval cartouche on the left stock flat. Complete with a hickory ramrod with swelled tip and metal ferrule threaded for cleaning and ball removal on the opposite end. As a limited production type, the Model 1813 is in strong demand by collectors. The pistol has the historic importance as the first arms contract in which a gun maker agreed to provide a product with interchangeable parts.
