One of 5,800 percussion revolvers manufactured circa 1863- 65 by Rogers & Spencer of Willow Dale, New York, (which is near Utica). The U.S. Ordnance contract was for 5,000 revolvers, 1,500 to be delivered by the end of April 1865 and the balance by September of 1865. There is no record of issuance of any of the revolvers, due to the Civil War ending. The top strap is marked "ROGERS & SPENCER/UTICA NY". The matching serial number is marked on the bottom barrel flat, left side of the frame, cylinder, loading lever and on the butt. There are small single letter "B" inspection marks on most of the parts, including the bottom of each grip panel. The revolver is finished in blue with a casehardened hammer, trigger and loading lever assembly. Brass cone front, frame notch rear sights and fitted with smooth walnut grips with a sharp "RPB" cartouche on the lower left panel.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 4472
Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 90% plus of the original high polish blue finish with scattered areas of flaking and a small patch of minor pitting on the top barrel flat near the breech. There is a smooth brown patina on the exposed metal surfaces, There is some thinning and a prominent drag line on the cylinder. The grips are very fine with a few minor chips along the lower edges, as well as a few scattered minor storage dings. As noted above the cartouche is sharp. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. Additional information: Matching serial numbers on the various parts as noted, except the right grip which is numbered "4226". However the right grip has been on the pistol for some time and may have been a factory mismatch as it fits the frame and back strap perfectly and has the same subinspector letter stamp (B) on the underside and matches in color, condition and appearance as the left grip.
