[Merkin, Lester]. FRAMED NUMISMATIC ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS. Two hand-tinted engravings of coins and medals removed from antiquarian books and nicely framed. Both of these graced the walls of Lester Merkin’s New York shop and office. The first is from Giovanni Battista Ferrari’s Hesperides sive de malorum aureorum cultura et usu libri quatuor (Romae, 1646), a book primarily on botany, and depicts eight Greek and Roman coins portraying Hercules. It measures 29.5 by 20 cm [11.6 by 7.9 inches] and is attractively framed with a total measurement of 49 by 39 cm [19.3 by 15.4 inches]. The second is a plate from Knapton’s 1743 edition of Tindal’s continuation of Rapin’s History of England and depicts “Medals of Queen Anne,” being eleven coins and medals, all of them devoted to the events at Vigo Bay, attractively hand-tinted. It measures 38 by 23 cm [15.0 by 9.0 inches], is attractively framed with a total measurement of 57.5 by 42 cm [22.6 by 16.5 inches]. Both items are fine and ready to hang.
