Grand Prize, number 8970 for 5 shares to Stone & Downer in 1878. Signed by RH Brown and M Hennas. Four assessment stamps on back. The Grand Prize is listed as existing from 1876-1890 producing $2.5 million. Grand Prize was an important mine. By the time 1878 rolled in the population of Tuscarora had swelled to 5,000. Streets and alleys were declared public highways to prevent men from staking out claims on the thoroughfares. A ten-stamp mill went into operation. Miners' wages were up to four dollars a day. Oh, those were grand times! But they didn't last long. (Couch, 1943, p.46). Prag collection. City: Tuscarora State: Nevada Date: 1878 ID# 31006
