The Whale Fishery "Laying On." Hand-colored lithograph of whalers approaching sperm whale. Two boats, six men in each, are closing in with spears on a whale spraying water jets out of its blowhole. In the background, mountains and a sailboat. Lith. & Pub. By N. Currier. Condition: bottom and top edges of the lithograph have been removed. Image has not been reduced. Two small indentations (bottom center and top left). Light soiling. White residue along what remains of bottom caption. Measures 9 1/2" x 14" Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) was an American artist. Following the public's fascination with whales after the publication of Moby Dick in 1851, Currier published this in 1852 as the first of 15 whaling prints. Many of these prints were based off of paintings done by French artist Ambroise Louis Garneray.
