Currier and Ives, ?Season of Blossoms? hand-colored lithograph.
The firm of Currier & Ives, the most famous lithographers in America, was founded by Nathaniel Currier at 1 Wall Street in 1834. James Merrit Ives was made a partner in 1857. It was at this time that the now familiar term "Currier & Ives" came into being. The firm prospered until the deaths of Currier in 1888 and James Ives seven years later. Their sons headed the firm until 1907 when advances in lithography and uninspired management forced them to close. Works by Currier and Ives are highly sought after and very valuable, both for their historic and artistic value. Their value continues to increase daily, as does their following of collectors.
This lithograph is an outstanding example of the many lithographs that are now collected from Currier and Ives. Very intricate detail, and outstanding color make this an amazing picture that exhibits the excellent quality of work that C&I was deservingly celebrated for. This lithograph is in great condition, still showing all the exceptional colors. The size of this rarer, large image is 22? x 15 ½?. Matted with a beige colored mat and framed in an exquisite and marbleized frame making the size of the entire piece 30 ½? x 25?. Another print of this same scene sold in auction for $2,000, making this picture a great deal.
