Handpainted German topographic Coffee can / cup and saucer with a named landscape and view of the town of Zittau, with peasants harvesting wheat in the foreground and a very old steam engine train / locomotive chugging along one side. Red roofed houses, churches with steeples clearly depicted in front of a gentle mountain range, under a beautifully handpainted sky. Elegant, scrolling handle with gilded raised foliage bottom and unfurling bud top. Dates to very early 19th century, if not earlier. Saucer is 6 1/2inches in diam. Cup is 4 1/4inches to top of handle.<BR>Handwritten mark underneath Zittau. Gilding on borders is very worn, but no damage. Insignificant superficial glaze/age cracks under the saucer.Painting is pristine.<BR>Zittau is a town near the location of the oldest German porcelain factories such as Meissen.
