The Mercury poised on one foot, supported by a zephyr. He is depicted wearing a winged petasus on his head and winged sandals which give him speed in flight. He carries the caduceus in his hand, the staff given to him by Apollo that has come to symbolizes the practice of medicine. The god raises one arm to point heavenwards, in a gesture borrowed from the repertory of classical rhetoric that is characteristic of Giambologna's maniera.
