Springfield Model 1875 Officer's Sporting Rifle
This is an example of an early example of the Model 1875 "Sporting Rifle" as specially made by Springfield Armory at the special request of various U.S. Army Officers to the Chief of Ordnance. Each one of these rifles were individually made and to avoid the time consuming custom work, the Ordnance Department decided to standardize the "Sporting rifle" and renamed it the "Model 1875 Officers Rifle". This particular rifle features a 26" barrel with a German silver blade front globe sight and the standard rear folding rifle sight graduated to 800 yards. The breechblock is marked "U.S. / MODEL / 1873" and the lock is marked with the eagle shield motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873" ahead of the hammer. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the " P / eagle head / P" proof marks and the buttplate tang is marked "U.S.". The top of the breechblock and left rear of the barrel period are stamped "CTC" (significance unknown). The breechblock, hammer, upper tang, lock, latch, buttplate tang and top of the barrel band are decorated with floral scroll designs. Mounted with a half stock with a replacement wooden ramrod with horn tip, silver decorative, lightly engraved ferrule and carbine iron buttplate.
BBL: 26 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with a few minor dings on the barrel and some light oxidation on the remaining surfaces. The stock is good with a few minor fill repairs, sanding and finish touch-up on the bottom of the forearm area. The checkering on the wrist and knob show heavy wear and overall the stock shows minor scratches and dents. The Springfield on the lock is faint, otherwise the markings and engraving are clear. Mechanically excellent. What a colorful Old West original U.S. Springfield Model 1875 Officer's Model!
